Q: Is this strictly for water or can it be used for syrup also?

I use it for syrup. works really well. As far as the syrup goes I do a 1/1 ratio of sugar and water. The syrups you buy may be thicker but it should definitely work.

Q: Will this fit in a medium box?

No. This bee feeder is suitable for deep bee boxes. The length of this beehive feeder is 8.49", which only can be placed in the deep bee box.

Q: Would this method of feeding bees water help prevent mosquito larvae from growing?

We use it to feed sugar water to weak hives and to feed over winter. As it fits inside the hive we have had no problems with mosquito larvae here in Alabama
