A good read
There are so many myths around gardening and this book sets the record straight with proper research. If you are studying for the RHS level 2 you'll find lots in here to help with revision. But if you are new to gardening you should find it useful and interesting too. The illustrations are clear and compliment the written info.Sometimes I was left hoping for more in depth info. But if you check out the back of the book you'll see links to the research papers it you want to delve a little deeper.

Making me a confident Gardener
I love Dr Farrimonds books and this is no exception. From the scientific explanations to the practical application, this book has already given me confidence to prune well. I particularly like how the combination of illustrations, science and expert knowledge guide me to understand and do gardening better. The ‘myth busting’ section was a surprise and has simplified my take on what to do and not do. I reckon this book will save me time (and money) and is giving me what I need to make my garden thrive. I’m delighted with it!

All in one book for gardening
This book is very illustrative and easy to read showing all there is to know about gardening. It covers various topics and helps to guide you on how to grow your plants properly with the science behind it. I have found the book to be very useful in learning as to why things are with evidence. Very good and sturdy book, the price is a bit steep but good for what it offers.

This is an excellent book dedicated to demystifying the secrets & science of gardening.
The book goes into the ‘how's and why's’ of practically everything related to plant growth, it features excellently written explanations and skilfully crafted illustrations. The book is built on the premise of making gardening more approachable and understandable and answers all the typical questions someone might ask. Regardless of what type of garden or plants you’re growing there is a wealth of information contained inside. Not only does it go into the science of gardening but it even goes into a lot of the ritualistic aspects of gardening. The author mentions, debunks and clarifies a bunch of the common myths and old wives tales surrounding plants to help reduce the spread of misinformation that can often do more harm than good to your plants. You can absolutely grow a great garden without a lot of this information but if you’re the type of person that finds yourself asking why something is the way it is, this book will scratch that itch. For those climate conscious folk you can also learn about the environmental impact of seemingly innocuous choices in garden & home maintenance that can have a surprising impact on the climate. There is a full length bibliography at the end of the book so you can easily look for additional information related to various topics covered in the book. Some of the subjects covered could quite easily fill a book on their own and compromises clearly had to be made in order to fit everything in. With that said, the book does a good job of covering all the bases and if you want more info the list of citations at the end can provide that, as the book draws from a variety of source material from a wide range of experts.I fully recommend this book if you’re looking for something related to plants and gardening, the book is printed well, and the contents are expertly crafted. The mention of science might be daunting but it really does an amazing job of pulling you in and providing the science without pointlessly confusing you with technical terms and jargon. You also don't really need to read this from front to back, you can quite easily open this at any random point and learn something new, which allows you to break up the learning into small manageable chunks if you’re the type of person who doesn’t like to sit and read in long sessions.

Full of great advice
This is a book that I was a bit wary about, it has science in the title and I wasn't sure how much science this would have in it. It actually is a really easy-to-understand book and one that makes a lot of sense and is full of great advice.I love gardening and have a mix of trees, flowers, shrubs, fruit and veg. Using this book alongside my own knowledge is going to be great as I am just starting to plant out and grow for the upcoming season.Whether you read this from cover to cover or just flick through it until you find something that catches your eye it is very accessible. Understanding more about the soil, conditions plants like and the right and wrong times to chop things back is something I am aware of, but not necessarily why I do things the way I do. Most of my knowledge has been passed on from family and friends. Being able to refer to this book has given me the chance to build up my knowledge further. This is a visual book so there are a lot of images and diagrams rather than pages and pages of writing. Having visuals make this easier again to understand. The text that accompanies the imagery is simple but to the point. This is a fabulous book and I often pick it up and flick through it, or use the index to find something specific. It is a book that my husband and myself glance through regularly since it arrived, leaving it on the kitchen table makes it easy to grab while having a cuppa.Fabulous book, with great advice and one I would definitely recommend.

It makes you wonder about the right things
At first glance, this book looks and reads like an adult children's book in the way its presented. I think its the style of the illustration. That being said, its a very interesting book. I'm still reading it, but the information it holds feeds that intellectual itch while being what I would say is an easy, light read. For instance, I did not know plants could sense color (which makes sense because they sense light), and I didn't know they had 15 senses and could smell. Its plainly put and doesn't get too deep, but it definitely brings up really interesting things that one might want to further examine.I'm glad I bought it.Lots of good tid bits of information.
