If you are a fan of the XKCD comic, no explanation is needed. Buy these books. If you are not, you will be. These books are not collections of the comic, though. They are collections of serious scientific analyses of questions like, "If you simultaneously fire a sufficient number of guns at the ground, can you use their collective recoil to 'fly?'" Think "Mythbusters" in written form but more bizarre and backed by actual science from a physicist, not science-like experiments designed by SFX guys.

These are fun books that encourage readers to understand that silly questions can be considered from many perspectives. Book 2 is somewhat more difficult for my younger readers to stick with for the results.

Let your curiosity flourish; read these books! I was introduced to the original "What If?" nearly a decade ago, and it quickly became one of my favorite books. When it came to my attention that a sequel had been released, I had to have it. Between the witty humor, authentic calculations, and brilliantly-simplistic cartoon style, these books are fantastically entertaining with great potential for revisitation. Randall Munroe is the science teacher we all wish we could have had in high school.
