Q: Does this chair go upright so one could sit straight up to knit?

It always has a slight incline. I'm not sure how straight up you have to be but it is more of a recliner and even in its most upright position it's got a slight incline. It's very comfortable especially with the foot stool and I have no problem having my laptop on my lap and using it to write, but I don't have to sit perfectly straight up for that. Sorry I couldn't know for sure for your use.

Q: Some people refer to this chair as 'compact'. Is it something larger people (tall and fat, some both) would have any discomfort in? *I have since purchased a different chair. Thanks Everyone.

This chair, although probably not considered "compact", is not big by any stretch of the measure. I can say that it is VERY low. I'm not that tall at 5'11" with a 35" inseam, and I'm actually sitting on a pillow that I put on the chair. I can't function with it as low as it is. I have NO idea why I am still using it. Lazy I guess. It won't handle a lot of weight for very long. You can just tell. The armrests are suspect due to their mount. The base is weak. The swivel is junk. Did I say it STINKS? Dang thing still smells bad. If one is tall, and fat... pfftt. I wouldn't want to have to climb out of the thing if I was 6' 5" and 340lbs... no matter WHAT shape I was in.

Q: Anyone know if the fabric is fire retardant?

It is a type of plastic based vinyl leather substitute which means it is oil based and therefore flammable.
