Read it in two days! Couldn't put it down.
I really related to both narratives of Lara and Maggie - it was like having two friends from different avenues of life - when you're the glue that binds these relationships. Reading about the same incident but from an alternative (never opposed or opposite ) point of view. It would of been easy for the author to write a 'she saw it like this ......but SHE..saw it like that'The clever observations complimented each other, I was engrossed in the 'blended families' versus 'traditional families' and what other people think is going on behind closed doors. As a daughter of a strong tempered father I sensed the undercurrent before I read it - so clever where her descriptions.Domestic violence isn't a symptom of poverty, poor education or broken marriages. Its misery is the same whether in a poor rundown estate or in a beautiful detached showcase home.Well done to the author for delving into this complex and not talked about issue whilst still creating a funny, humorous and honest account of family life.

Got into the book fairly quickly which I like. Found it to be a real page turner
First book I've read by Kerry Fisher and won't be the last. Got into the book fairly quickly which I like. Found it to be a real page turner. Normally just read in bed at night but had to pick this one up during the day. A few twists and turns kept me wanting to find out what happens next. Great characters and good picture of the scenes set, contributing to bringing the story to life. Very enjoyable. Would recommend.

Excellent storytelling
I really enjoyed this book. The different characters of two brothers. Family secrets. The ghost of the first wife threatening the happiness of the second. The more sinister spectre of domestic abuse. There was a reality about this story that made uncomfortable reading at times but always within context. Excellent writing.

A definite page turner
I wasn't really looking for a book at that time as I have a few unread books on my kindle, but I started to read the sample and got hooked. I then couldn't stop and it became one of those books you just HAVE TO finish! Including leaving housework, staying up late and generally just sitting in a chair reading! With an undertone of secrecy all the way to the end you just need to find out what happens. The characters are portrayed strongly and everything is described so well you almost feel like you're a fly on the wall. Full of twists and turns within a family it's full of typical actions and behaviours you could expect from an in-laws family, at least in my experience anyway and it really reminds me of why I am so glad and really happy to be single!

A great holiday read
I didn't find this "a gripping emotional" page turner - I found it more of a "need to know what blooming happens next" page turner! I loved the story, and I especially loved the way the chapters were written from the views of the two women, Maggie and Lara. The story was a bit obvious, but it didn't matter as it was beautifully written.I liked the dysfunctional dynamic between the family - it goes to show that you really don't know what goes on behind closed doors - and made me realise how normal my own family is!There were a couple of laugh out loud moments, as well as a few "no way" moments too. I really didn't want the book to end.Thank you for a great read.

Gripping!
Loved this book delving in to family dynamics. Other people's lives are always fascinating and you never really know what goes on behind closed doors. Really liked the swapping between first person of the female characters and didn't really want it to end. Would throughly recommend.

Family secrets
Kept you interested, telling the story of an over powering husband and family pressures from mother in law and family secrets. A good read.

A compelling read
I paid this book the tribute of doing something I don't remember ever doing before: getting towards the end, I started again from the beginning, so that this time I could savour Kerry Fisher's delicious turns of phrase as well as the storyline. The chapters are told alternately by Lara and Maggie, married to two brothers. Lara seems uptight, cold and distant, but in fact she's winning a daily struggle to preserve her sense of self in the face of her husband's hidden coercive control. Maggie, and her mum, are salt-of-the-earth graduates of the school of hard knocks. And the hard knocks still keep coming ...

A story of finding strength
This is my first book from this author and I was pleasantly surprised. There were times where I was getting frustrated with Lara, wanting her to open up her eyes and wake up, but I'm happy the book ended. Around 70% I was getting nervous thinking that Lara's newlyfound spirit was going to retreat and she was just going to cave, but it didn't end up that way. I wish that SHE was the one to instigate everything instead of things just happening the way they did without Lara having to grow a backbone, but it all worked out in the end.As for Maggie, I really liked her. I did get annoyed with how she couldn't see what was happening and how judgemental she was being, but she stepped up in the end and I'm glad she did.I really enjoy stories where characters show how much they've grown over the course of the story, and I think this book is a good example of that. Hope to read more from this author :)

A True Slow Burner.
I seldom give five stars: to me, four stars is everyone else's five..Kerry Fisher has written a book that is, in my opinion, a great work. It has the makings of greatness in one primary way: it is a slow burner, which is the way the best books have always been written. If this book was a piece of classical music, it would build towards a clashing of cymbals, a screaming of violins and a shouting of trumpets.Reading this book, you will experience anger, rage, exasperation, hurt, fear, tears, and redemption. It's truly great and if you want to read about real emotions: of love, of hate, of impatience, haughtiness and spite; you will love this book.

What you see is not always the reality
I loved this story. Some reviewers thought it was tedious but I was captivated. I'm a fan of Liane Moriarty and love reading a story from different characters point of view. I'm always fascinated by the contrast between how a person is perceived and the 'face' they present to others compared to the reality of their life. I spent every spare moment reading this story. I'll probably now binge read everything that Kerry Fisher writes.

A must read
For those who love Jodi Piccoult and Liane Moriarty, this is a must read. It is honest, raw, beautifully written and crafted. The prose took my breath away and the author's ability to create two such distinct characters, both of whom I grew to love and champion, left me in awe. In some parts, I had my heart in my mouth. A breathtaking book.

A Brilliant Book Indeed.
A brilliant read that left me feeling as though I know everyone in the book well enough to invite over for a cup of tea. I loved the story line and the twists and turns it took along the way entwining me into the story line with each page. Kerry makes you feel part of the story with her own special way of writing. I think Kerry Fisher has a very special gift indeed.

Gripping page turner
Such an important & relevant topic to cover. I enjoyed the quirkiness of some characters and thought the portrayal of the 'silent' wife was very well done. The author did well to demonstrate how insidious controlling behaviour can be. This book was serious, humorous, gripping and entertaining. Easy 5 stars.

A good read
I usually read crime thrillers, I thought I'd try something different and I'm not sorry! I loved Kerry's style of writing, the way she describes her characters, their personalities and the family interactions made me laugh out loud. Thank you Kerry, I'll be reading more of your books.

Great read
This book gave the greatest description of repeated gaslighting that I have ever read in fiction. This was a riveting read that had me flipping back pages and re reading I would even read this again in the future

Slow
50% of the way through and there was still very little evidence of anything thrilling to come or what the husband had done that the wife was being protective of. So boring I returned it for a refund. No idea how it ends. Don’t care.

The Silent Wife
I loved this book also . It's so well written and weaves the various family problems (including domestic violence) together brilliantly with the different perspectives making it even more interesting . I too am now a fan of Kerry's books and hope the others live up to this one. Keep writing, Kerry!

This is a great read; insightful and humorus.
This story tells, in a very clever way, how relationships often are. It is so entertaining in describing these family interactions. The end of the story tells of what you have wanted to happen, but is brilliantly done. The last part got me reading well into the night. Highly recommended.John Walton from New Zealand

this wasn't about some women knowing her husband did something bad but loving him enough to not care
Awful, this wasn't about some women knowing her husband did something bad but loving him enough to not care! It was a feel good, unrealistic boring drama
