Great way to fill large areas of plaster
Our house is getting on a bit and some of the plaster is starting to 'blow', i.e. separate from the wall, it's not enough to warrant having the entire wall re-plastered but some of the patches are quite big. Until I got this device I relied on a metal straight edge and a plastering trowel, used with either patching plaster or filler. This worked reasonably well, as long as I was wallpapering that wall. This skimming blade has made a great difference, I can now flatten off quite large areas of patching to something approaching a professional finish, it does take a bit of getting used to, but there are some useful videos that help. Once you have the technique right though it is a lot easier to get a flat and smooth finish, that could be painted.I have the 22" version of this device and it I think that it's a good compromise between size and convenience, a longer one would allow bigger areas to be patched, but would also be more cumbersome to use, and I'm not sure that I would want to patch anything bigger than this could handle. I wouldn't have the confidence to attempt to skim an entire wall, or re-plaster one, but for repairs this is a great help.I love its construction, it is comfortable and secure to hold and the fine blade really works well, the whole thing feels very sturdy and well made, even though it is quite light to handle. I am not sure if it is good value at £39.99 (at the time of writing) as I don't have anything to compare it to, but because it makes life so much easier I am leaving it as a five star rating

Surprising easy to use
I’ve never used a tool like this and am amazed at how easy it was to use. Yes I made a couple of mistakes by pressing to hard to start with but I’ve always thought this sort of DIY was beyond me but this is excellent. I found a couple of Youtube videos for tips and the rest is learned by feel. Does it look as amazing as a professional’s? No but it really isn’t bad and is certainly better than it was before. I’ve improved some areas that needed a touch up and, I’m just about to move and where I’m going is going to need a fair bit of décor updating and I have to say that I’m (sadly) a little excited to see how much I can actually improve the look of it myself. I’ll need a professional for the ceilings but I’m certainly willing to give the walls a go myself now I have this. From the videos, I see that this type of blade comes in various lengths and for me, this 22” blade is the perfect length. It’s long enough to cover a decent amount of wall at one time but not too long to be unwieldy for the inexperienced. If you’re thinking of having a go at skimming your own walls, with a little practice and the occasional re-do, you might find that you could end up saving yourself a fortune by doing the job yourself. The blade comes in a decent box which I have retained and am storing it in to keep it protected. The skimming blade tool feels incredibly well made and is easy to hold. It’s light and well machined. The blade has a decent protector cover for when it’s not in use. It really is as impressive to look at as the pictures show it to be. It’s a simple tool that adds a professional edge to the DIYer. Love it.

Not sure if its blade sturdy enough
The media could not be loaded. The blade is quite thin, easy bending it shows in my video. It does lightweight that less than 1 kg @ 990g, which is easy to handle. The working area around 795mm instead of 800mmOther than the blade, I think it is easy to clean and handy as well. However the blade is too thin and I wondering how it holds.

Handy to have
I personally don’t do DIY(only because I’m utterly rubbish), but I have a great father who comes to mine to complete DIY tasks, so I thought this was handy to add to his collection in my shed- to which he completely agreed. I asked him for some pointers for the review and he gave the following:Nicely packaged tool and first impressions were particularly good- dad personally felt this looked high quality for the type of item it is.The main part is light weight sturdy aluminium with a ergonomic handle. A stainless steal skimming blade completes the item. The blue colour is a nice added touch. Not entirely sure how long the blue will last, but that’s just an irrelevant side note.Dad advises that he usually uses a float, but is keen to be using this. Firstly he went to YouTube for a tutorial (he’s a bit of a perfectionist) and found exactly what he was after. He did advise that was an absolute must for beginners.Dad was impressed with using this item to go over the wall after he removed some wall paper. He felt is was an excellent tool to have in the kit. After a bit of trial and error (aka practice), dad picked up a technique that worked for him and even one-handed came out with an excellent finish on the wall. Dad has now said the float has been ‘resigned.’Difficult to tell if it’s worth £40 as neither dad (nor I) have used something similar before. What we can say is it’s a brilliant tool.Overall we’ve been pleased and happy to recommend for others tool kits.

Fab for that last coat
55cm skimming bladeA lightweight and easy to handle skimming blade. A large and chunky metal handle, which is easy to grab and keep a hold of. It all seems well made and durable. The blade is nice and sharp, as it should be. This part is protected via a cover. The ends of the blade have a nice corner, then the rest of the edges of the blade are rounded off lower down.My step dad is a builder, one of his fortes is plastering. I asked him to give this a try for me. He said this works well for when you need to get a good length of the wall in one go. Now for the first layer, his favourite will always be the basic generic builders trowel but he said for a final coat, this was actually quite good. He was able to get a nice and smooth finish, the ends allow you to get up corners but then the rounded parts don't effect the wall next to it if you're up near two walls. This isn't bad for the price. I would recommend it. Perfect for that last coat.
