Excellent book!!
Amazing book! I'm in my 2nd year studying Environmental Science, with a special interest in marine conservation and I LOVED this book! It is so beautifully written and really informative! Even if you're not studying it it's a really fun read!

Brilliantly written and incredible facts that will amaze you
A fabulous book and a really engaging read. The facts are amazing and will have you shaking your head in disbelief, I couldn't put it down. Explains why we must protect the deep and how as a planet we are dependent on the whole ocean. Highly recommended.

A life-changing & astonishing read.
This book changes the way we need to look at life on the planet. Dizzying and urgent.Helen Scales is a phenomenal explainer and describer of wonders. Human eyes on the deep's treasures put us on a precipice of catastrophe we must avert. The most important book I've read in a long, long time. I cannot recommend it more.

Fantastic journey into the deep sea
I thoroughly enjoyed uncovering the mysteries of the deep sea and learning about how these ecosystems support us. As someone without a biology or marine background, by the end of this book, I felt I had a broader understanding of the subject. I highly recommend this book.

Brilliant and informative
Loved this book, absolutely fascinating and learnt loads - slightly depressing it had to be said but that's a reflection on the modern world more than this book! Look forward to the author's next title.

Very Informative
Well-written and quite fascinating. I've always had an interest in the bizarre life forms of the deep and this book is a great account.

Meh....
A bit of a disappointment to be honest. A few chapters were interesting and the lady obviously knows her deep-sea stuff. But then it descends into a general pitch for "Green" technologies in a bid to save our deep oceans from exploitation. The ironic truth is, the fundamentalist pursuit of these woefully inefficient methods of energy generation will ultimately lead to ANY form of additional resource being considered an option - including the exploitation of the deep oceans. For a genuinely insightful look at the truth regarding energy generation and use, have a look at The Bottomless Well by Peter Huber & Mark Mills. Any recommendations on a good book on the deep seas, I'm all ears!

Ecologically Significant
One of the best books I have ever read. Scales speaks of life in the twilight and abyssmal zones. She levels concern at those who would mine the sea floor. She talks about seamounts and the importance of preserving unique species that could disappear before we can find life saving medicines. Scales discusses the dangers of slowing sea currents and human activity that has depleted fish stocks. Brilliantly written.

Incredible book!!
I read this book for an assignment at school and I thought that it was amazing! I like to read but I rarely read non-fiction books because I find some of them hard to get into, but this one was not the case. I really loved the author's style and their way of presenting the information left me wanting to keep reading. I can honestly say that there were points where I couldn't put this book down. I would absolutely recommend reading The Brilliant Abyss if you are in any way interested in marine biology and the environment, and even if you aren't, as I think that the book has a lot of interesting information and a great message.

Fanstastic
This book is really exceptional, describe the abyss life and clearly explain the threats that human activities are posing to this dark deep wonderful world, and more chilling, the threats that human activities may pose in the future, if specific plans are carried out. I loved it, you should really read it :-).

Amazing
10/10 if I could read it again for the first time I would. It was so accessible for a layman but so deeply researched and fascinating. An absolute delight.
