The Book Thief -Teacher Guide by Novel Units

The book was helpful in supporting my on-line student through the book. I really appreciated how quickly the book came.

An excellent resource if you are an English or Literature teacher teaching this text for the first time. It provides a fantastic literary analysis. Lots of insightful comments on literary features such as similes, metaphors, symbolism, metonymy, parallelism etc. Chapters of this book are based on a significant part in the novel. The chapters start with a short summary and are followed by meaningful questions which are accompanied with possible answers. The vocabulary boxes are also excellent, as are the suggested activities. I stumbled onto a cracking resource here - it really is fantastic!

This book didn't provide anything that I couldn't already do as a teacher preparing for a unit. Sometimes other teacher guides come with primary sources or articles for students to read about the time period, but this book had none of those resources. You're better off just grinding it out on your own.

This resource is an excellent base for instruction, but it is by no means a unit plan on it's own. Like other reviewers, I found the questions to be a little elementary and not very critical. However, with some adaptation, this resource is excellent help.

This guide includes things like vocabulary words and definitions (an insult to teachers willing and able to pick up a dictionary themselves). In addition, there are a few suggested activities which seem more like time-fillers than actual exercises in critical thinking. I was hoping for some good discussion questions, quiz/exam questions, and possible essay topics (none of which were included). Very disappointed since this "guide" did not offer to save me any time or provide me with any actual usable resources.

I used this book to create a collaborative activity online for my 9th graders to work on in pairs. They created wikis based on the discussion questions and supplementary activities. I think the questions made the kids think deeply about the book and relate the cultural and historical significance.
