Great, still great 5 years later - BUY
UPDATE 2019-01-11 - I just had to tighten the screw on my reel for the second time in 5.5 years. I use it for my ID badge at work and have since the day I bought it to replace the cheap ones which seemed to fail once a year. It still works great like it is brand new. I'm an engineer and just checked the string where they usually break and it still looks good. Eventually it will have to fail but I've not had to buy one of these in 5 years. This is the best one of these I've every owned. I just ordered another to squirrel way for the day when the string on this does finally fail. This has been a great purchase. BUY.ORIGINAL - Super pleased with this purchase, looks nice (for a large ID card reel), seems strong, larger so you can get a better hold of it to push it on to a belt. Only minor complaint is the clip is so strong it is hard to push on a belt and times and there no way to easily slide a thumb in between to aid in putting it on and not tearing up the belt. Any way to open it up the mouth of the clip for easier install would make this a perfect design.

FOR BACKPACK
I bought this ID Card Reel for my backpack, it is light weight and works well. Received it this morning (five days before it was schedule for delivery) -- love the two tone hues of stainless steel and black, very contemporary. Appears to be very solidly built, should last a long time.I haven't decided definitely how I'll use this ID Card Reel (likely attach keychain to it so keys don't slip out of my pocket) but would recommend it to others for its meant purpose. The clip is sturdy and affixed with a screw.DIGITAL SIGNATUREI like to close my reviews with a THANK YOU because I do appreciate you investing your precious time in reading my material. The best
I've been using these reels for about 9 years now. Each one lasts me 2-3 years with maybe 300+ pulls a week.I can fit a badge, a quick reference card, a heavy parking fob, and a couple of lead x-ray markers and it could hold more I'm sure without sagging. The clip is great and never slides off my shirt when I pull the reel. The plastic with the snap will wear out so I recommend getting a very small keyring loop and using that to hang your badges from. It will last much longer.

It's not perfect, but the jamming is fixable! Besides the jamming it is good.
I just got this badge reel because my old plastic one broke and I wanted something sturdy. So far sturdy and I like it. I don't know if I'll have the pull cord break like some other people. I'll update if that happens.BIG PROBLEM: The quality control on this product seems poor. The Constant Force Spring inside of it seems badly designed. It would jam a lot and eventually get loose enough to just not pull the cord back in.On the plus side, unlike cheap pull cords, you can easily open this one up.FIX: First off, be careful with the following. The band of metal used for the constant force spring is thing and will cut your hand. It shouldn't be bad if you are careful, but if you have something to protect your hands like work gloves, then get them. You'll need: Needle-nose pliers, work gloves (ones you don't mind getting greasy).1. Remove the screw and pull out the clip.Note 1. Care on this next step. The metal band used for the constant force spring can cut you or jump out. Try to keep it together.2. Pull apart the two halves of the pullcord apart. Take care to keep the spring wound up as much as possible.Note 2: The outer end terminates with a little triangle of metal. This is folded so that it points out.*3. Take your needlenose pliers and fold this triangle so that it points inward towards the center of the spring.Note 3: Keep a finger (ideally gloved so you don't cut yourself like I did) on the loop of metal (this is the spring). Otherwise it will pop out. Ensure you keep that finger in place at all times.4. Pull the spring tight and carefully wind it.Note 4: If the cord is out, make sure it gets wound back up.5. Repeat pulling the spring tight and winding it until you are satisfied with the torsion.Note 5: There should be a plastic bit sticking up near the end where the pull-cord comes out. Make sure you don't wind the metal through the slot it forms.6. Carefully place the end you twisted on the far side of the slot (see note 5). This way when the spring pulls on it, it won't go through that slot.7. Being very careful to make sure the spring doesn't pop up, slowly slide the cap back on from the side. Make sure it is lined up properly first.8. Close the ends together, put the clip in place, and put the screw back in.The pullcord should work perfectly now.*Thought: You might notice that there's a slit cut in the side of the inner black casing that holds the spring. I think the triangular end of the spring was supposed to point into that. I didn't want to bother to see if I could make the original design work, so I just twisted this triangular end back so I only had to worry about the plastic slot.I gave this 3 stars since I think otherwise the quality is good. Honestly it seemed hard to find a nice sturdy design. Also, I think if the cord DID snap on me, then I could just replace it by opening this up further. So being able to actually fix this if it breaks is a place. So 3 stars is relative to what else is out there that I saw.It would be nice if the manufacturer adjusted their process so that these card reels didn't come broken though. - 30 points to them.

Does what it says on the tin.
Larger than I expected, but I got used to that pretty quick. Sturdy and reliable so far. Does what it says on the tin.Update 8/29/13: This badboy has lasted me well over 2 and a half years before needing to order a new one. Sure, the body is scratched and dinged some, but this thing can take punishment like a boss. The string and reel have held up just fine, but the plastic clip that holds the badge is very close to snapping in two. Also, the clasp has weakened such that it comes open very easily these days. I'm looking forward to another couple years plus with my next one.
