A separate review of the book and of the game
Okay starting off with a review of the book, its solid but with a few very strange layout choices that can make it hard to follow if you aren't particularly familiar with rpg book layouts. That being said the game is maluable enough that if your group forgets a detail here or their it'll almost certainly be fine. The art is amazing albeit largely recycled from the comics, the tables are well fleshed out but could always use more details and theirs far too few enemy creatures in the book for the fact their has yet to be a bestiary for this game.as for the game itself it is SHOCKINGLY fun, its ultimately a d20 system so the learning curve isn't very steep, theirs lots of customizations, and the unique way the skill system works creates a unique feeling of authenticity where characters are forced to be awkward and very human.

Make Sure to check book once it arrives
I ordered this "New."When it arrived, there was very little packaging to secure the book, and one of the corners was scratched/scuffed. When I started to really look at the condition of this book, it has several scratches, a couple of them I see no way to have happened during shipping. Also, when I opened the book, I noticed more than a few of the pages had those "greasy fingerprint" residues, like it had been thumbed through more than a couple times.Overall, from going through the book page by page, it doesn't seem to be missing any pages, and none of them seem torn. So, that's a plus.As to content, it is most definitely an Essence20 take on Power Rangers. Fun, good info, nice background. If I wasn't one of those people who like my NEW books to be and look new, I could probably have given it a higher rating.

Lacking but gorgeous
As a system, essence20 feels like it puts its focus on customization of characters where each characters skill set has a place to shine. Yet, despite the gorgeous presentation and promis. The system itself lacks in the terms and explanations department. Let the alone uterrly lackluster monster and enemy's collection. Sending DMs and players to search the internet for many explanations and ideas. After all that, the game is a lot of fun and the books are beautiful. I do recommend giving them a chance. If you are an experienced ttrpg player or dm

I just don't think Renegade game studios knows how to make a game
The book is poorly written, and creating a charecter just didn't feel exciting, I'm glad that the book is lgbtq+ friendly, but maybe they could hire people to read their book? Get rid of typos, clarify, and maybe an easy step by step on charecter creation. With an example charecter.

Not For Power Ranger Fans
I have never played Dungeons and Dragons, but I am a hardcore Power Rangers fan and I pre-ordered this book (from Renegade Game Studio's website). My only expectation was that this book had a framework of rules with which I could jump into table top role playing. I did not get that. I have read through this book multiple times, and I still have no idea how this "Essence20" system is intended to work or if there even is one. I assume they intend you to have full knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons, and this book may only be elaborating on how "Essense20" is different from Dungeons and Dragons, but I honestly have no idea.Let me just point out one specific example: "perception". What is a "perception" check? This book doesn't even explain that. It mentions that it is for fog, dim-lighting, etc. but WHY? The vast majority of the Power Rangers show takes place in broad daylight. "Perception" checking is a mechanic that makes more sense in Dungeon and Dragons where you have magicians (who I guess could sense magic in the environment) or trackers (who I guess could track footprints of animals), but it makes no sense in the established Power Rangers universe, and this book never even explains it. It is mentioned in the tutorial mission, but even witch what is supposed to be an example it never elaborates on anything...I don't like the art. I would have preferred they used stills from the TV series. Hell, I would have even been fine if it looked like the old 90's comic books. :DThere are so many funny and goofy things that happen in the TV show. What about being cooked into a pizza? What about being turned into kids? What about being forced to dance uncontrollably? What about being possessed (for example by Maligore)? What about body swapping? What about being turned into a bad girl/boy wearing leather jackets? The Power Rangers RPG book has a "Conditions" section, but all the conditions listed are your cookie-cutter conditions from any fantasy RPG. It is not designed how the Power Rangers universe works, where many villians from the show apply unique status effects often with unique ways of overcoming them. The Power Rangers RPG should have provided a framework for making unique conditions, not just list generic fantasy crap. Why are powers/abilities/stats tied to your color? This is just dumb. Plain dumb. The blue rangers is not always the "smart" one. The green rangers is not always the "persuasive" one. Etc. etc. This prevents us from making the ranger we want to be. You must be the ranger the book wants you to be. This even goes into the zords. The book forces you to to play with preset zords with specific stats/abilities per color. Why? Why can't I be a "green triceratops"? Ugh...The tutorial mission, "A Fool'S Errand" is some weird hybrid... thing... In a way it is a tutorial mission because it lays out a story and area, and tells you to perform some checks like "DIF 13 Insight Skill Test", but at the same time it is not a tutorial mission because it doesn't TELL YOU HOW TO DO THE CHECKS!!! SHOW STEP-BY-STEP EXAMPLES OF HOW TO PERFORM EACH KIND OF CHECK!!! Seriously... what was the point of this tutorial mission...?I have many more comments... but I'll stop there... I wanted this book to be good. I love Power Rangers. But... me is big sad... :(

Bit of a mess
I purchased this book to run some one-off FUN roleplaying game nights at our local game store. This is not the product for that challenge. Character creation is long winded and first time players would be lost in the swamps of options, point spending and mysterious choices. The Power Rangers are a simple fun concept, but this badly edited book is a sprawling mess that deconstructs that fun into a nerdy rabbit warren of dice ladders and weird rules that over complicate the action flow. New players beware... don't choose this as your first RPG purchase. You and your group will be stumbling around in the dark room of this 'Corebook' looking for illuminating examples and simple explanations that just aren't there. I've been playing RPGs since 1981 and my game library close to room sized at this point.. and nowhere have I got a rulebook quite as dense and obtuse as this one. It's like they don't really know how to explain their game system. Power Rangers should be a pick up and play game...not a heavy tome of chit chatty confusion that treats the reader like they should already know the Essence20 system in advance. Poor product.
