Q: Could I wire A variable speed switch to this motor to get more precise control of the speed?

I'm not sure. But I can tell you it has 3 wires for speed. Low med and high if that helps.

Q: Assuming these are sleeve bearings, can one oil them "now a days"? Annual lubrication adds years to a motor but, I never see oil ports anymore.

There are no oil cups. It is very similar to the one I am replacing that does have oil cups, but I would dare say, they have not been oiled EVER since installation in 1978 when the barn was built. Motor quit working but was not frozen up. Still turns freely. Just won't work. Was cheaper to replace than to rebuild. Estimate would have cost about $125.
