Q: Would this work for warhammer 40k?

It can. These are made for typical 60in(5ft):1in scale of many RPGs. Warhammer 40k plays kinda loose with their scales. So don’t expect it to be exactly fitting. Then again, many people in Warhammer hand-make their terrain and building from found parts - so it really isn’t expected that terrain and buildings be exactly fitting anyhow.

Q: Are there enough parts in here to make the basement dungeon from the curse of strahd "death house"?

I think so. I made about half of a dungeon from Dungeon of the Mad Mage with this set, so I would imagine it could handle the Curse of Strand.

Q: Has anyone tried painting these and if so was there any prep such as cleaning to remove oil?

They accept paint and permanent markers very well. Not aware of any prep needed. Bonus, the plastic used is immune to Isopropyl so if you make a mistake painting them, you can clean them chemically easily and they will go back to their ‘base’ aesthetic so you can try again.

Q: Will this work for a 3d Heroquest board?

The parts of the Dirt Cheap Dungeons sets and kits are all on a 1in scale system like most TTRPGs and boardgames. Might not match up perfectly if the scale is a bit off, but you can usually easily adapt it.
