Poor guy was in extreme pain
My older dog started to develop hot spots at the base of his tail that quickly escalated to a visit with the vet. Poor guy was in extreme pain. Pain killers, antibiotics, and Benadryl later, his skin was still very raw, itchy, and painful. I tried this product to see if we could get some quick relief. It is very thick and applying it to raw skin is "problematic" and painful. At the same time, the thickness also means it stayed on longer even when he licked the wound. The most important thing is that it WORKED! After one day of applying it twice a day, the skin was a little less raw. After two days, the skin had returned to it's normal color and raw wounds were healing nicely. It wasn't long after that I started to see new hair grow on the now healed wound. Cons: Its a bit pricey, hurts the poor guy at first trying spread the think paste on raw open wounds, and the paste ends up on cloths, carpet, furniture as the dog lays or brushes up against things. Pros: A little of the paste goes along way, wounds healed pretty fast so the pain is short lived, the paste is easy to rub off the furniture as it drys and, doesn't stain.Again, this stuff worked and my dog is recovering nicely. He is aging with arthritis and will probably experience this again so I plan to keep this Salve on hand to prevent the wounds from escalating to such a painful level in the future.

Helps a bit but was difficult to spread.
The salve has a bit of a peanut buttery texture, so it can be difficult to spread over the affected areas without irritating your pet a bit.We ended up getting the lotion as well which in my opinion works a little better since its easy to get on the pets itchy irritated skin.As for flavor I didn’t taste it so that’s a weird criteria to review. Based on it smelling like the stuff you use for diaper rash I wouldn’t recommend eating it. Though the smell is not nearly as bad as some say. If you’ve used the diaper rash cream their pretty much the same.My dog showed no discomfort while applying the product or after it was applied.

Product works great!
This is the only thing that has consistently promoted hair regrowth on our dog's hot spot. Our dog had a huge spot on her side (about five inches across and five inches up and down) that she had chewed the fur off of for about two years. We tried antibiotics, antihistamines, allergy drops, and even lotion with coal tar in it. Nothing did nearly as well as the Dermagic salve. She is now only on the allergy drops and the salve and her fur is regrowing slowly but nicely. An amazing product! It did take about four weeks, though, to start seeing visible results.February 8th, 2016 update: This salve is absolutely amazing. After about two months of use I was able to cut down to one application a day. Our dog's fur has grown back and she has stopped chewing on her side. Such a blessing after about two years of her chewing on her hot spot. We also changed her dog food to a food that had ingredients that she was not as allergic to as her old dog food.Friday, March 18th, 2016 update: Have now completely stopped using the Dermagic salve. In fact, I haven't used it at all in the last three weeks or so and she has completely stopped chewing on her side. No more hot spot and complete fur regrowth. ! I can't even tell there was a hot spot there.

Great Ingredients, Hard To Apply
I bought this in combo with the lotion for my lab mix who has chronic skin allergies. The salve is very thick, which makes it difficult to apply. It is hard to get the product fully absorbed into my dogs skin, having her fur as the initial barrier and the effort it takes to get the salve to the point where it looks like it is as absorbed in as it can possibly be. Because it's being applied to a sensitive area, my dog was very unhappy about the force I needed to use to rub the salve in. I think the product would be excellent if it was a bit thinner and easier to apply. You definitely want to keep your dog off the furniture once applied and unless you want to launder your dog bed cover frequently, I recommend putting a towel over the dog bed when using this product. The smell is potent (but not unpleasant if you are OK with "natural" scents) and the salve is sticky. Side note: my dog has a white coat and the salve is yellow so it did turn her coat yellow around the areas applied.

Only stuff that REALLY works!
WE have been through almost every product on the market that says it's for Hot Spots for dogs, since our dog suffers with these year round. He's a longcoat German Shepherd prone to skin allergies. We tried everything advertised out there to help him with no relief! Then we found Dermagic and I wasn't expecting this product to be any different, but I was wrong. It must really be magic , because it actually REALLY worked. It actually clears up the hot spots if you continue using it for at least a week straight. For the first time in years our dog actually had fur where it was normally chewed off. It gave him instant relief because he stopped licking and itching once we applied this product to his spots. He had so many spots on his groin, legs, rear end, and tummy that we had to stock up on this as it is thick and he has SO many spots. It helps to cut the hear or shave the hair where the hot spots are before applying this as it will penetrate the skin, where it can actually work to clear up the hot spot, rather than just sit on the fur. We are so GLAD to have found a product that actually works!
