Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders (DVD)

Did not know what to expect, and I was really busy, and ordered thisto be sure I could get a copy.When I finally got work caught up, I was blown away when I got around to looking at this.I am old enough to have seen the silly Batman series, first run.Made myself a plastic model of the George Barris Batmobile, with the red trim.(I was a girl that made models.)When I saw a promo for this movie/cartoon, on another DVD, I had to get it.What a great idea. Turn the tables.Take the live action series, based on comic book characters, and turn aroundand do animation based on the live series.SO GOOD! So many laugh-worthy things, one after another.I have never laughed so many times watching ANYTHING.So much better than the live series, by many degrees.This movie has 3 original actors reading their original parts, and the charactersthat did not have the same actors had folks doing very passable voices to fit in.Fun is poked at the live series, with in-jokes all along the way.There was even more labeled bat-gadgets than ever, and even making funof how much bat-labeling was in the old series.Aunt Harriet lets Alfred know she knows what's going on: meaning whythe guys keep going out at night.And there is an aside to the audience that she understands why Bruce Waynekeeps Dick Grayson's old maiden aunt around.That is referring to why the TV network wanted her around: to fend offcomments about why a grown man is living with a young male teenager,and they both run around in tights.This character was not in the comic books, and was added to be family-friendly.At one point, Batman gets conked in the head, and sees triple:he's looking at Catwoman, and sees three of her.There were 3 actresses that portrayed the character, 2 in the series, and onein the movie that came out while the series was on.So the in-joke is that Batman sees the 3 different catwomen as he tries to focus.The animation is actually excellent, the story is right out of the kind of stuff donein the series, and the whole thing is set in the mid-60's, like the series.The ridiculousness of the series is toned down, and somehow instead of makingyou cringe, you just have a great time laughing. Especially when you realizethe whole thing is one long string of in-jokes.And that the actors are COMPLETELY onboard, and having a ball.They make quite a few very rude, off-color comments, and Catwoman gets right outsexy toward Batman.At one point, Batman is dancing around like on the old series, when he danced"the Bat-tusi" in an episode.The BEST PART is what plays with the credits.YOU HAVE GOT TO WATCH THE CREDITS, ALL THE WAY TO THE END.There is a great payoff. But it is at the very last bit.I think this DVD is for grownups, or almost grownups.I'm gonna watch it again, with a fresh bowl of popcorn.Want to see how many in-jokes I may have missed.

What a dose of Nostalgia. I heard that the opening credits incorporated many classic comic book covers with some fantastic animation, so I took a look this morning before heading to more important tasks -- but I could not stop watching. Fascinating, funny, festive, friendly, and very alliterative, the actors, writers, and animators knocked this out of the park.I think I spotted at least 50 sly references, and I'm sure I missed many others. Labels, labels, labels galore. I was thoroughly amused throughout. One thing I've noticed is that nearly everyone is staying spoiler-free, but the twists are like punchlines to good jokes. None of the dozens of punchlines are particularly surprising, but they are all fun, and many of them require the set-up, animation, and acting to be meaningful. For example -- "Begora" is one of these punchlines. Explaining why it's funny wouldn't be funny, so why ruin the joke?The movie does get a bit dark. In one particular scene, Robin is horrified by a punch that doesn't follow Marquess of Queensberry rules. Robin's reaction to that punch and subsequent actions keep the movie grounded and friendly. I have to give special acclaim for Burt Ward, here -- his exuberance and delivery hasn't changed an iota.Does the movie get some things wrong? Like the Joker's hidden mustache? Yes and perhaps. There are dozens of things that are not quite like the 60's show, and hundreds of things that are spot-on perfect. I don't recall hearing the Riddler's music cue, but the Batman theme is incorporated well in many places. The producers have already mention that some of the "mistakes" are intentional, such as the colors of Robin's logo being flipped in a throwaway shot, an homage to mistakes in previous animations. I will be watching this many times.The sequel has already been announced, with William Shatner as Two-Face.This is the most enjoyable movie I've seen in years. Highly recommended.

Wow, DC did something right! All the elements you'd want in a new 1966 Batman are here except for the full theme song. The writers channeled Lorenzo Semple Jr. perfectly. The voice acting was great. The 3 returning stars know the roles inside and out by now, and the voices and mannerisms were spot-on for the newcomers, with the exception of the Penguin. To be fair, Burgess Meredith's voice seems like it would be the hardest to emulate, and I think the VA who did the Penguin did a good but not great job at the start of the film. Towards the end of the movie he seemed to get better at it, and if you watch the special features, he completely nails it when he does his Penguin voice in an interview. If Pengy returns in another one of these films I think he'd sound just like Burgess Meredith next time around. I was very impressed at how much the Joker sounded like Cesar Romero, and even more impressed by how well Wally Wingert captured Frank Gorshin's voice and mannerisms. There was only one thing I really didn't like about the movie, and that was the Joker's fart gag. There's no way Cesar Romero would have let his Joker do that, he had way too much class. I hope that the writers resist the urge to throw in gags like that in future installments. Two nit-picks I have are the lack of a white mustache on the Joker, and the Tyrannosaurus Rex statue in the Batcave. I don't mind that they added a T-Rex to the Batcave per se, but I wish they had used a more period-appropriate version. The '60s view of a T-Rex would have stood upright; it wasn't until the late 1980s that the modern view of T-Rex came about, with its spine parallel to the ground. Anyway, I hope to see more of these, and would love it if it became a regular TV series.

Home Entertainment is proud to initiate a series of animated movies under the new ‘DC Classics Collection’ brand and totally honoured to have Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar give new life to these iconic characters,” said Mary Ellen Thomas.The only thing I found slightly disconcerting with this animated feature film ‘BATMAN: RETURN OF THE CAPED CRUSADERS’ is with the voice of Adam West, who is as you can understand is now much older, especially as he was born on 19th September, 1928 and of course when he appeared in that hilarious camp TV show ‘Batman’ from 1966 to 1968 and was at the height of his acting career, but with this animated feature film his voice has changed dramatically, and when you hear him speak his voice tends to quiver and is to my mind slightly off putting, and especially with his 2016 voice it makes me feel I am watching the animated TV series ‘Family Guy,’ because in that animated cartoon he is the Mayor of the fictional district of Providence in Rhode Island, and when you see a photo of him today, you can understand why he looks like the spitting image of the fictional Mayor. But despite this situation, this animated feature film is totally brilliant and totally awesome, and the people who did the animation should definitely get some kind of award for their sterling professional work and I hope more of these Batman animated feature films will be released sometime in the near future.Blu-ray Video Quality – Warner Home Video has brought something special with this release in presenting the video images in stunning 1080p encoded images, and an equally stunning 1.85:1 aspect ratio that really shows off this amazing animated film with truly amazing images. Overall, this turns out to be one of DC comic books better-looking and least-problematic releases, and Batman fans of both the studio's animated titles as well as the 1960s TV series should be pretty happy with what they get here. So full marks to Warner Home Video efforts in showing us this amazing animated cartoon in true high definition glory. Sock! Bam! you get to hear throughout the animated film, that really shows off the sound effects to its full potential of this DC animated release, which is totally crisp, clean, and free of any noticeable defects. There's very little use of directionality throughout, although one instance that I do remember is when Bruce Wayne throws the red bat-phone into the fireplace at Wayne Manor. The spoken word is exclusively up-front, which leaves the surrounds to be used primarily to enhance the musical score, but it is very much a dialogue-heavy release with several scenes where no surround usage is being made at all. So all in all this is a brilliant effort on the part of Warner Home Video.Blu-ray Special Features and Extras:Special Feature: Those Dastardly Desperados!
