Wonderful illustrations and interesting content that provokes further exploration
This book feels like an encyclopedia I might have had as a kid. It's modern, but the gorgeous illustrations have this historic feel to them. It's very appropriate for a book about extinctions.I like the size of this book, the fact that it's hardcover, and the format of 2 pages per animal. It makes it easy to pick up and read about a few creatures. The theories behind the extinctions are presented matter of fact with little to no undertones of agenda.I also found that I was constantly finding additional topics of interest after being inspired by various facts and tidbits from this book. I look forward to sharing it with my kid once they're a little older. This review was for "Atlas of Extinct Animals (Large Encyclopedias) Hardcover – April 26, 2022 "

A beautiful and important book
Wow, I was immediately impressed by the size of this lovely book - over 13" tall! The cover is also stunning with bright colors and a cloth spine. It just has the look and feel of a quality vintage book. I haven't read every word, but skipping around a few different animals I found the writing to be interesting and engaging and the stories of the animals fascinating and sometimes heartbreaking. I will say, with the caveat that I have not read the entire book, that the authors seem to take a "mankind is bad" sort of bent, attributing many of the extinctions to the deeds of humans - true, and tragic, in many cases, but sometimes the cause is unknown and to point fingers speculatively at man seems rather disingenuous. Also, though the book is an encyclopedia type, I read things like "We've already been to the such-and-such islands..." indicating that the authors expect the book to be read front to back. Admittedly, small issues, and undoubtedly some will argue my first point, but I'm just putting it out there. Ultimately this is an amazing and important book that should be on any animal lover's shelf or coffee table.

Beautiful book
Beautifully made and crafted book. The content is great, full of interesting details of extinct animals all the way from prehistoric times to more recent. The artwork is unique and beautiful, really reminds me of drawings back in the day - not really made to be super or hyper realistic looking but kind of got that flare that is from scientific art you may find in encyclopedias.Only thing I would say however is reading through the content, the author does make it kind of judgy. Yes, I know that we should be better in taking care of the environment and protecting our creatures but its almost like the author is straight up saying, you guys did this (which we did yes I understand). It just felt a bit weird having this "voice" and tone in the book. Other than that, I would totally recommend this book. My toddler loves looking at the wonderful pictures.

Cute but poignant encyclopedia of extinct animals
In terms of design, this book is beautiful, and will look great on a shelf or coffee table. I love the red paper spine, and the illustrations are really nicely done. However, where the book really shines is in its message. Each entry nicely details an extinct species, with some artistic renderings and a nice page of information on the animal. The poignance of the book is that each of these beautiful animals perished through human folly. On the back cover of the book we are invited to "Give the fate of the Blue Planet some serious thought. It is in our hands."This book makes a fantastic gift for an animal lover or environmentalist in your life, both due to the quality of the physical object and the message of its contents.

Beautifully formatted and informative book
This beautifully illustrated book would be a worthy adornment to any coffee table. It is eye-catching at an unusual height of 13.5". This height and its gorgeous front cover invites closer inspection.Inside are 40+ creatures that have gone extinct as a result of humankind. Each animal has a full-page, quality illustration, along with smaller illustrations and well-written prose. Some animals will be familiar to the reader (e.g., mammoth and dodo), while others are more surprising. For example, the Zanzibar leopard (extinct only 17 years ago) was wiped out due to superstitious fears among local inhabitants. This book reminds its readers that the constituents of the animal kingdom are fragile, and actions often have unintended consequences. However, it does this without moralizing to the same degree that modern diatribes often do when excoriating the evils of humanity's existence. I appreciate this and can recommend this atlas to young and old alike.

Beautifully Rendered But Heartbreaking, So Timely ...
This is one of the kids' favorite books right now. It is oversized, and absolutely beautiful. There is something weirdly Victorian about the illustrations which just take the readers back to another world. But, in all of this beauty is sadness. I think that is why this book is a go-to in my home right now. There is a sense of consternation at the word "extinct."The illustrations are huge, detailed, and so engaging. The "texture" is almost tactile, that is how expertly these are rendered. And, I think that makes these even more heartbreaking. And, certainly, the history creates that same feeling of loss. Some of these creatures have only been extinct for a "short" period of time (maybe fifty years in the case of the Grey's Wallaby); nonetheless, they are gone forever. This book is a timely reminder of the fragility of this planet's inhabitants. It is beautifully rendered and a celebration of these little lives as much as cautionary tale. A great book for any personal library.
