Spirocore 4/4 Cello D String
This is one of the best chrome/steel cello D strings I have used. It's only out done by the pricier Spirocore tungsten D.

Not good on factory cellos.
My cello now has a full set of Spirocore strings: Chrome-A, Chrome-D, Tungsten-G, and Tungsten-C. These strings have remarkable tuning stability: within two days, their pitches were as steady as my well-worn set of strings. (When my Larsen strings were new, they took about a month to become stable.) My first impressions of the Spirocore D were its incredibly fast bow response and its gritty - almost gut-like - sound quality; however, I quickly learned how to make it sound clearly and without any grittiness. The sound of it now is pure and brass-like: almost like a french horn. The sound is not as friendly, warm, beautiful, and complex as the Larsen D, but it can be worked with to make a great range of variety: from gentle and pure to brilliant and tense. One additional piece of advice: if your cello is more like a wooden box with strings than a cello, these spirocore strings produce some very loud high-frequency overtones that will hurt your ears and be unpleaseant to play. This is due to the loud close-range echo effect that such low quality cellos posess. Get a nice cello before considering Spirocore strings.
