Good, but not great.
Maybe I expected too much from such an inexpensive lens. I'll break this up into good points and bad points.Good:It's light weightIt provides a much wider image than the built in camera lens. The image does remain pretty sharp in the center of the frame.Bad:It's only sharp in the center of the frame. As you get towards the edge of the image, the lens is very soft. Time will tell if it is unusably soft, but it is noticeably different from the camera without this lens. Much of this blur is actually chromatic aberration and not just out of focus imagery. With high contrast items, it is clear that there is a red/blue aberration on items near the edges of the frame.Even though it's wider, you have to zoom in a bit to get past the very noticeable vignetting. Once you zoom in far enough to get past the vignetting, it's not that much wider than the built in lens.Zoomed all the way in, the image is very soft all over - though this might work fine for an ethereal, dream-like sequence or something. The lens negatively affects the focus ability of the camera. While the camera does still focus correctly, it takes a lot longer to lock focus on an object.Other:This is a Vivitar brand lens. I didn't see the brand mentioned in the description, so in case you're wondering...I find it a bit laughable that Vivitar made it black with a red ring. It makes me wonder if they did that to purposely make it look like a Canon L series lens. I would much rather it perform like an L series lens than just look like one.I don't really get the point of the macro part of the lens. (this lens has two parts that can be unscrewed - the macro part and the wide angle part. The macro attaches to the camera and the wide angle screws into the macro part. You can't use the wide angle without the macro part, but you can use the macro without the wide angle part.) Maybe the macro only portion works for other cameras, but my camera can already focus down to a half inch so the macro only part is pointless for me.I don't know. Maybe I just expected too much. You do get what you pay for and screwing a very cheap wide angle lens onto a consumer camcorder isn't exactly a recipe for top quality images. I was just hoping for less (no) vignetting and a sharp image across the frame.Edit to add: Well, this was a waste of money. After testing the lens on longer videos, I can say that this lens completely messes up the focus of the camera. Over time, I can sit and see the camera constantly alter focus during the entire duration of the videos. Every few seconds you can see the focus move around. It will lock focus, but a few seconds later, it's shifting around again. It's like the camera is never satisfied. I have to wonder if the chromatic aberrations and poor focus on the edges of the frame are causing this. The camera sees the out of focus areas and shifts focus to correct, only it can't be corrected so the camera is shifting focus the entire time. Because of this, I have to change my rating to only one star. It's rare that I give out such a poor rating, but if an object causes more problems than it fixes, then the rating is deserved. For adding a wider image, this lens subtracts image quality, causes focus issues, and adds unwanted vignetting. In other words, it causes three problems but only fixes one. Because of this, I cannot recommend this lens to anyone.

The Good, The Bad, The Really Bad.
The Good:1. For the price, a great way to get some really good wide-angle shots. I work for a race team and this lens was really good for getting full pit or car coverage with out having to step back too far to get it.2. Fit my CanonVIXIA HFM31 perfectly! No special adapters needed, just crew it on and it's ready to go.The Bad:1. It causes some vignetting when zoomed out all the way. You don't see this in the view finder of the camera, but when you look or edit the video later, they are there. The Really Bad:1. The lens came apart after about month of using it. The inner "macro" lens popped out into the main body and just rattles around inside. The overall lenses is metal with what looks like good construction, but using it every week must be too much for it I guess. Conclusion:If you are new to doing videos and want to see what a lens like this will do for you, I would definitely buy this lens for the money. It's a great "starter" piece. But if you need a lens that will last, I would save up for a professional model that you can depend on.

Works well, but does vignette
I have the Canon HF M300. This lens fits fine and, for the cost, produces a very nice image. The only issue I have as that when zoomed out all the way it causes minor vignetting in each corner. Because this is a wide angle lens and the point is to capture a wider field of view, this is especially frustrating considering the lens was advertised as "for the HF M300." I do not have any filters or adapters in place between the stock camera lens and this wide angle lens and I do not have a lens hood in place. All in all, I would recommend this lens if users don't mind these minor drawbacks. In future shooting sessions I will simply have to remember to zoom in slightly and make sure everything I want to get in the frame fits. Even zoomed in slightly, I think it still captures a bigger area than without the wide angle lens.

The lens did what I needed in providing a wider angle view. However, there is vignetting in the corners when in full wide mode. These are not visible on the camera's display and you only see them when you playback the video on a TV or computer. Once you get used to the lens, you can compensate for this.

Excellent lens for the price.
Man was I ever surprised at how this extends my frame in my Canon HFM 300. Great lens for the price...comes with a very nice carrying case and covers. I am pleased with this product. Fits my Canon HFM 300 to absolute perfection...screws right in without any adapters...well made product...high quality results...sharper images and extended wide screen frame will open up your Canon to many new possible shots...and it does NOT cost you an arm and a leg. I highly recommend this lens.

OMG...WOW!
That was fast shipping and as I looked at the picture...I can now cover more of the field and get more of the action as it happens without moving the camera!
