Do not buy until researching the HD issue.
Be aware that Synology has moved to a model where you will need to purchase their brand of HDs or a very small selection of other manufacturer's drives on the compatibility list( none above 8TB) if you want the full capabilities of your NAS. I installed 14TB Seagate EXOS drives and they came up UNVERIFIED. Contacted Synology support, and was told that I should switch out the drives as they were not on the list. I believe that in the UNVERIFIED state that the NAS would not read or report drive health that could lead to data loss. As a long time adopter of Synology NAS', numerous deployed since 2012, this drive drama is not a good move as I am moving to other brands. They have lost me as a customer.EDIT: Returned to Amazon as after the volume was built and tested, the system was in alarm and no drive information was available.

Deliberately won’t work with bog standard enterprise HDDs!
Sinology has jumped The shark. Deliberately not allowing us to use the most standard *enterprise* HDDs in the industry, Seagate EXOS, is a flagrant violation of trust, and a clear money grab. There’s absolutely no reason not to support these hard drives, and it’s a slap in the face of us long time customers. This is the last sinology device I will ever buy. Build your own server, of find a company that doesn’t deliberately throw road blocks at you to artificially make your job harder, and then offer “the solution“ is throwing more money at them. FML Sinology!

Vendor locked hard drives
As noted by another reviewer, if you purchase this newer model you must purchase their expensive model of HDD. This means you should probably look at another brand unless you like paying too much.

Only Supports Synology Hard Drives
Do not purchase this unit unless you plan to buy Synology hard drives which are almost twice the price of a comparable hard drives. There is only a couple third party drives that is supported. According to Synology the developers designed it this way and there is currently no eta on supporting more third party hard drives.

VENDOR LOCK to SYNOLOGY BRAND drives
This product enters a failed state when used with anything but Synology brand drives. This is a money grab by the company. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. When booted with non-Synology drives, system health is critical, the storage pool is degraded and you lose access to drive health data.

Lack of Supported Drives a Deal Breaker
I have the 2421+, and I thought I could live without using supported drives but no, it's bad. Yes it works, but having it show critical all the time is a pain, also it doesn't show the bad sector counts, the drive temperature, allocation status or drive status. Even with unsupported drives it should still read this information, yet they don't show it.I won't be buying more from Synology going forward because of this. I'm ok with not having customer support, but don't limit information that would otherwise show up.

disappointing
Extremely restrictive hard drive compatibility. It'll throw up a *critical* security warning for using "incompatible" hard drives which effectively disables any actual tests and warnings for serious problems. Absolutely gets rid of any point in buying a synology device since that disables the most important features of a managed array.

Great NAS but their supported drive list is atrocious for this model
You can basically only use the Synology HAT5300 drives in this. Every other drive will leave your system in a "Critical" warning state and without any warranty/service. Works great though if you spend the cash and use their stuff.
