If flint and steel are iron age, ferrocerium is space age. Often called ferro rods, with practice they are extremely reliable and completely impervious to the weather. The ferrocerium rods we sell are of the highest quality and could potentially last well over 10,000 fires. *Each ferro rod come with a scraper and paracord lanyard. *The scrapers have a coating of paint. Sharpen the edge of the scraper to remove the paint for even better sparks. Two Keys Points when using ferrocerium: A hard and sharp scraper is essential when using a ferrocerium rod. It could be a sharp piece of metal, glass, stone, even a sea shell might work. The sharper and harder the scraper the easier it will be to produce an abundant shower of hot sparks from your ferrocerium rod. Fortunately we include an excellent scraper with each ferro rod. Remember this is spark based firelighting, not flame based like a match or lighter. Tinder preparation is critical. Tinder should be dry and very fine. Grass, bark, wood shavings, and other plant fibers are excellent sources of tinder, provided they've been processed correctly..
