ATR Magnetics C-90 Ferric Cassette (Single Tape)

Good sound for "normal" tape
I recorded an SACD on the ATR Magnetics C-90 Ferric (Normal Bias) cassette tape. I let my cassette deck calibrate it's Bias settings to match the tape, and I recorded with dbx noise reduction. The SACD, of course, sounded better than the tape on playback. However, the tape was closer than I expected. It didn't miss any of the details... the details were just not as present and as open as they are on the SACD. I didn't evaluate the tape for noise (hiss), as hiss is not an issue when recording with a dbx. For comparison though, I also recorded the same SACD, under the same conditions, using Maxell XL II (New Old Stock) CrO2 tape. Back in the day, Maxell XL II was my go to cassette type when I was making critical listening cassette recordings. I could hear no discernible difference between the the ATR and Maxell recordings. So if you are looking for a modern cassette tape, that is made in the USA, and competitive with some of the best cassettes from the past, I think you would do well to try this tape.
