The most essential book of our time. Get lots of copies, give them away. People need to read this.
A book so important and necessary, and shamanic in its truth telling beauteous power. Jay Griffiths describes ‘this’ moment in time, in ways which reveal what we actually need to see, know and remember in our DNA. That we are nature. The 11 essays are like waves connecting and re-connecting and never letting go of the reader’s hand.It is a love song, sombre, delicate and full of deep grief and raging with love for life. Intimate and essential. There is so very much potency and quiet gentle strength of thought in this book, I could quote from every page.Griffiths is so skilled a wordsmith that she brings alive in the reader’s soul the essence of what we need to give attention to and takes us to a place of deep remembering of what it means to be alive and the interconnectedness of all things. And why we must listen and act with a politics of kindness and care in these escalating times of climate and ecological emergency and mass extinction. Why we need to care about all life...the importance of the tiniest of insects...in our rebellion for life on Earth. This book is exceptional in how it speaks to the heart and finds home in the soul, with its rich guttural metaphors which open up all of our senses to be present, in the reality of now.If there is one book you should read this year; this is it.

Terrifying, inspiring - and essential reading.
Jay Griffiths' already unimpeachable literary reputation can only be further enhanced by this, her latest work, which is both terrifying and inspiring in equal measure. These essays add up to a manifesto for humanity's survival on our critically damaged planet; her breadth of knowledge is breathtaking, and her impassioned appeal for immediate action will surely make a profound impression on even the most cynical of readers, expressed as it is in prose which is as lyrical and elegant as readers of her previous books have come to expect. It's striking that the book's title has no question mark: were the book's title WHY REBEL? it would imply that not rebelling was an option ... but we all know it's too late for that. Instead, it seems to me that WHY REBEL means (a) why I, Jay Griffiths, am a rebel, and (b) why you and I, the reader, must rebel - in the face of potential extinction, there is, in common parlance, no Planet B. Should any reader doubt the scale of the crisis, then the chapter on the implications of the disappearance of insect life should surely dispel any lingering scepticism. WHY REBEL, then, is not a question: it's an imperative, a call to action that no one can afford to ignore. This book should be essential reading to all in positions of power, especially at government level ... this is THE TRUTH, from an author who has done her homework. We ignore the message of this book at our (and our descandants') peril. Read it, tell your friends, buy them copies ... I have. You should.
