Father Kevin ODCWay of Perfection for the Laity: A Detailed Explanation of the Discalced Carmelite Third Secular Order Rule
J**.
EXPLANATIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS OF THE DISCIPLINES OF THE SPIRITUAL LIFE
The prerequisite for reading and profiting from this text is the belief in the spiritual life and a personal need to continue on the journey into its rich darkness from whatever point you are in your life. If you are like so many in our time who live lives centered on the TV, sports, material things, etc. this book will make no sense to you. If, on the other hand, you feel within the deepest part of yourself a call of Someone Greater to continue on into the journey you have already begun you will understand and enjoy the text. It was written by a Discalced Carmelite priest in the early 1960s to describe and clarify the Rule of the Third Order of the Discalced Carmelites. This community still exists today and is known as the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS). The Carmelite family is a Roman Catholic community dating back to the year 1155 A.D. when it was founded as a community of hermits on Mount Carmel in what is today Israel. The secular Carmelites have updated their "rule" as discussed in the book but anyone might read the clear explanations on mental prayer and its types, the place of fasting and abstinence on any spiritual journey into the Unknown and the need for periods of silence. These are just some of the disciplines which have been practiced and validated by countless Catholic lives throughout the past 20 centuries. Whether you have begun to experience that call to be a pilgrim along the path of the "inner life" or you have been traveling that path for many years you will recognize your needs and be guided on your way to understand the vocabulary of the spiritual life. If you are satisfied with that temporal, one dimensional life surrounded by addictions to material "things", sports, rich foods or the latest television series don't bother with this book--you won't even finish the introduction.
