Newbie Rug Maker
This is my first time trying to make a rug, so I admit that I'm not extremely knowledgeable about all of the tools. I tried using a "linen blend," which seemed way too tightly woven and more like the sort of fabric you would use to upholster something, before trying this piece. Several YouTubers had recommended monks cloth for rug making. The cloth is similar to cross stitch fabric, but it is very soft and flexible, whereas cross stitch material often feels stiff and starched to me. Still, it has a similar weave to it, although maybe a tad beefier, since I'm using yarn and not embroidery thread (normally, wool would be used). Since I haven't tried real linen or the other fabrics suggested, I don't really have anything to compare it with. The fabric seems to be holding the yard, which I'm not even doubling. This piece of cloth is about the right size for a bathroom mat. Compared to other fabrics such as canvas, duck, burlap, or even linen by the yard, it seems a bit pricy. So you might find a better deal by the yard or on a different material recommended for the same purpose by the yard. The prices for fractions of a yard seem overly inflated. It may seem economical for a one-time, small project, but you wouldn't want to continue to invest at this rate.

Soft, Strong, Serged Segment of Quality Oat-Colored Cloth
This ~26x19in swatch of oat-colored monk's cloth is soft but strong with serged edges and feels well made. Has just enough stretch and is not stiff. Easy to work with. Should be suitable for most punch needling projects. I'm very pleased with the feel and quality.
