Transforming Tihar : India’s Largest Prison
Dr Kiran Bedi has been a trail blazer all her career. From being the first Women Officer in Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1972, her Police career - stellar, though not devoid of controversies due to her upright approach - has been a series of firsts. One of her most talked about assignments was her 2 year posting as IG (Prisons) in charge of Tihar Jail in Delhi in 1993 – a prison having over 9,700 inmates being the largest in India and possibly one of the largest in the world. In “It’s always possible” : Dr Kiran Bedi recounts in great detail the pathetic and inhuman conditions she found the prison, its inmates and most of its facilities. And then, how does she go – one inmate at a time - trying to transform the Prison with simple, human workable solutions. The high point description is about introducing Vipassana Meditation course for inmates inside the prison, culminating in a 10 day Vipassana camp with over 1000 inmates participating and conducted by Shri SN Goenka , the global head of the Vipassana Meditation movementA great book to read about how to try bring “metamorphosis” in such a large public facility often in-the-media glare, and the deep devotion and commitment and can- do - attitude required to make it happen.

Transformation of prison
An inspiring account of how Kiran Bedi achieved the impossible and transformed Delhi prison into a more wholesome, functional and educational environment for the benefit of the inmates and the society into which they would eventually be released. Highly recommended.

India Oh India
Interesting account of what is is like in an Indian Jail. Unfortunately, I left the book in the Emergency Room of a hospital before I was finished reading it. But I recommend reading it.
