"Sit down, shut up, don't you cry; Thing'll get better if you try..."
The July '65 mono U.S. version of OUT OF OUR MINDS (LL 3429), with its color photo from the Rolling Stones' 12 ×5 session, has a different playlist than its British counterpart, including a track ("One More Time") found nowhere else. This retooled LP hit the #1 spot on Billboard's 200 Albums chart later that year and ultimately earned an RIAA Platinum Record for selling over a million copies.RANDOM NOTESKeith's falsetto backs Jagger on their Chicago session waxing of Don Covay's "Mercy Mercy." "Hitch Hike" is a hand-clappin' Marvin Gaye cover. Jagger/Richard's original "The Last Time" was a #1 pop hit in Britain and #9 in America (in March '65). Their remake of Sam Cooke's "Good Times" is a nice change of pace for Mick and his mates. "Spider and Fly" has the feel of a tune tossed off in the back of a tour van. It's casually bluesy and has clever lyrics. "I'm All Right," written by the entire band, is credited to the fictional Nanker/Phelge songwriting team. It's a "live" track from the Stones' final British tour before they crossed the pond to record in the U.S."Play With Fire" is another group effort assigned to their pseudonyms. This flip side of "The Last Time" barely made Billboard's Hot 100 (#96) while not charting at all back home. Phil Spector plucks away at an untuned bass on this one. "Under Assistant," another Nanker/Phelge classic, was 'B' Side to the American single of "Satisfaction." BTW, what can be said about the latter song except: rock & roll masterpiece! It was the Stones' first U.S. #1, and after some initial underground British airplay also topped charts there. ROLLING STONE magazine lists "Satisfaction" as #2 on their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and since 2006, this record is part of the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.MUSICIANSMick Jagger (vocals, harmonica); Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica, organ, pianos, harpsichords); Charlie Watts (drums, percussion); Bill Wyman (bass); Jack Nitzsche (organ, pianos, harpsichords, percussion); Ian Stewart (organ, pianos, harpsichords); Phil Spector (zoom bass)SIDE ONE[2:45] Mercy Mercy[2:22] Hitch Hike[3:35] The Last Time[2:23] That's How Strong My Love Is[1:57] Good Times[2:21] I'm All Right[3:45] Satisfaction[3:08] Cry to Me[3:10] The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man[2:15] Play With Fire[3:30] The Spider and the Fly[1:58] One More TryTOTAL TIME: 33:09
