SchminckeHoradam Artists Watercolour Trial Set - Colour Selection 1 (5ml tubes)

Schmincke has the most efficient tubes I've seen; you can get paint out with comparatively little waste. The colors are vibrant but don't have quite the translucence of the honey-based paints, which are my favorites. Because I have been primarily using Sennelier and M. Graham (both of which I love), the consistency of the Schmincke seems a bit odd to me. The paint got a rubbery crust overnight, which I have to poke through, and then I seem to pick up more paint (very gooey under the crust) than I want. Had more trouble getting small gradations between swatches when I was doing mixing swatches. No doubt it's my lack of expertise with the paint, but it will take some practice on my part to adjust from the honey paints to these.BIG ADVANTAGES: 1. Strong colors; 2. Good mixing selection; 3. The smallest color shift I've seen, wet-to-dry; 4. Schmincke for less than 30 bucks? No brainer. Had the price not been so low, I'd not have bought these, since I love my M. Grahams and Sennelier. So if you want to just try Schmincke, but don't want to pay tons, go for it!

This is a pretty great way to try a set of Schmincke without spending hundreds of dollars. I don't know for sure if their tube formula is the same as their poured pans, but this is pretty great stuff regardless. It's definitely not a sufficient watercolor set on its own - I was in need of a yellow ochre and a mid red anyway, so I just added these into my existing palette - but it's true that the vibrancy is hard to beat.

To preface, I am still new to watercolors. Until this set, I have been using basic beginner sets and have been enjoying them. With that in mind, this set has been incredible. The amount of pigment is tremendous and the colors are lovely. I like the tubes and have used them both straight out of the tube and dried in pans. Both ways have been wonderful. For the price, this set cannot be beat and I am sold on the Schmincke brand.

These are interesting watercolors. They are artist quality watercolors. I prefer a watercolor that has unpredictable atteibutes. This is not that watercolor. It stays where it is put. It doesn’t run, get muddy or bloom. I will use these when I want tight control and no surprises.

Lovely paints, its great you can get a trail set, before outlaying for a larger set. Just beautiful. A great mixing set to get a variety of other colours, highly recommended

Took a while to arrive through US Customs, but worth the wait. Good way to test new paints at great price.

These are basic colors that I will use to refill empty squares in my paint box. Schmincke makes the best water colors.

Fine quality watercolor paint. Strong pigment and a little goes a long way. Nice sample of 6 colors.
