This is art
The English translation is not the best, but still it manages to capture Tove`s ability to find words for the many conflicting feelings of growing up, living in a family and having secret, artistic dreams. However different my childhood was from hers, I feel like I am reading my own memoir, which in my opinion is the highest form of literature.

Slipping into dependency on the first shot
A very interesting account of one women's life in Denmark. She demonstrates a wonderful storytelling framework of her life from growing up, literary life, relationships, motherhood and drug dependency. All interesting and unique.

Get at your local library.
I expected fabulous book after reading NYT rave reviews. Childhood was well written. Youth - ho hum. Left the book before Adulthood.

utterly brilliant
Having tried everything on the Booker and bestseller list since lockdown, FINALLY a book worth reading. A ruthlessly unsentimental memoir of family life in a grim post-war Copenhagen that grows into 50s and 60s hippyish intellectual Danish life and illustrates how quickly a hard-won career can go wrong, and how difficult it is coming back from addiction. It's almost impossible to express why this book is so wonderful, but I knew from the first paragraph that I was in gloriously competent hands.

Brutal and powerful
I finally got round to reading this and haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. Powerful images, often quite brutal, and a golden but simple prose.

Grim, boring and dull
Not for me but others in our Book Group rated it. I found the plot grim, the characters thin and writing cliched.
