Our Final Warning: Six Degrees of Climate Emergency
A**R
Alarmist and not credible
The book starts with the 1 degree temperature rise since pre-industrial times (1850) without making the point that this was a very low point to start from. Do we really want to go back to ice fairs on the Thames and chilling, deadly winters? He then goes on to cherry pick studies that back up his argument. You can of course do this on both sides of the argument which alarmists and the so called deniers do. But it doesn’t illuminate anything apart from maybe, we don’t really understand the complexity of the climate on this planet? He points out that CO2 levels are at unprecedented levels without pointing out that they have been up to 17 times higher than today and, even during ice ages, they have been over 1000ppm.Even so, the historically wide variations in temperature that the planet has enjoyed through natural causes before 1850 is airily dismissed as nothing compared to the damage that man is causing now with CO2 emissions. He doesn’t cover any of the physics of infrared absorption by CO2 which make it very difficult to make the case against CO2 (hint - its all about the water vapour). He fails to point out the benefits of increased CO2 such as the greening of the planet, things grow better , bigger and faster with more CO2 plus, plants need less water and fewer people die of cold.He mistakes model outputs as “real” data when it’s not (as indeed do many climate scientists). All alarmism is based on model outputs not measurable, empirical data.Mr Lynas has religion, he’s seen the future and we should all be very scared and do exactly what he and the scientists (aka the high priests) tell us is good for us.Sadly, they have won and we will see massive set backs in the quality of our lives, increased poverty for the less well off as governments cave in to eco fascism and turn to an environmental.y socialist agenda.Of course, the peasants may revolt when they see the cost and over time see through all of this. This is all very similar to the saturated fats kill you campaign that was waged by scientists and authors such as Mr Lynas for over 40 years. There was no apology from the scientists who got it wrong, just a gentle tiptoeing away from the mess they made. The same will happen in the next decades if the scientists predicting the return of cold times due to a grand solar minimum are correct.

important book on climate catastrophe
excellent book;good value

Traumatic but important read
Heading for a 3-4C global rise in temperatures will have devastating effects. People need to understand that this is what we're currently on track for with business as usual emissions. Every human alive should therefore be made aware of what this means for themselves and their children, and this book is just the right starting place.

Everyone should read it
A well written easy to absorb book on a serious subject

70 pages of bibliography gives credibility for to a truly frightening read
This is essential reading for anybody who wants to understand the science as it was in 2000 when the book was written. The science proves overwhelmingly that we are in big trouble. Unfortunately it will need re-writing once the climate models have been modified to include the 2021 North west USA heat dome, after that the science will be worse. He takes us through what the world will look like with 1C heating (already there), 2C (hard to see us not being there this decade) all the way to 6C, which he argues quite compellingly is as likely as us remaining under 1.5C. Oh yes, 3C is when civilisation collapses. All his arguments are referenced to the source data/research and so backed with a very extensive bibiliography. If he got anything wrong it will be inconsequential to the whole cut and thrust of his argument. If you want to understand the problem, and what we should do about it to prevent us getting to 6C (essentially shut down all industry tomorrow, unless it is essential to life, or essential to decarbonising the atmosphere), then buy this book.

This is serious
Like most people I was aware of climate change but had little idea of what was directly involved for me beyond a vague impression that the south of England would have a Mediterranean climate. This book points out that it will be much worse and will arrive faster than expected – unless we all change our way of life. Now.Lynas is a British journalist who has dug out and read hundreds of academic and scientific papers written by the worlds’ experts. He’s distilled all that information into the six primary chapters in this book. Essentially we are already in one degree above his base level. At six degrees we are dead. And the politicians aren’t doing anything about it. He doesn’t say it in so many words but babies born today in this country will be unlikely to see the end of the century – not that the end of the century will be worth seeing when compared with today.I am no eco-warrior. I spent my career in the aviation industry. Before I read this book I had just rolled over a long-haul holiday to next year and now I feel guilty. Last year I bought a new gas boiler and now I feel I should have researched alternative fuels. My next car has to be electric. I have just eaten an orange from Spain. Spain won’t be growing oranges for too much longer.Read this book. It alarms me – as it was meant to. If the politicians won’t change when they have the opportunity to do so after this COVID shutdown then there really isn’t a lot of hope.
