Love it
Beautiful book, with lots of explanations regarding Burma cuisine habits (and recipes are great! The authors give many details about the recipe and how to cook). There are also so beautiful photo inside... It's not a basic cookbook: it's "an invitation to travel"

Beautifully done.
I love his book. As a Burma book collector I am usually dealing with dry academic works, poorly written novels or amateurish personal accounts. This book comes as a pleasant surprise. From the attractive dust cover with its double sided printing to the hsun ok patterned end pages and paste downs and heavy covered glossy text block, the whole feel is one of great care, quality and warmth. The text is complemented with numerous photos of the recipes as well as vintage photos and quotes from Burma writers. Congratulations to M. Polkinghorne for the beautiful design.I didn't count the recipes but there are plenty to choose from. I was surprised however that ohn-no kyaukswe (chicken coconut noodle soup) a top Burmese favorite was not included. I would have liked to see an index of Burmese names. This book should be in every burmaphile's library. It would make an elegant gift.

A return to an earlier life
My wife was born in Burma and left in 1948 when Burma became independent. We recently enjoyed a short holiday in Myanmar (once was Burma) where she was able to reconnect to the various houses, schools, hospitals, churches, etc. that she attended in her early childhood. The entire family (we were accompanied by my son and his wife) were totally taken with Burmese cuisine, to the point where we now hold Burma parties, dress up in longyis and cook all sorts of Burmese dishes. This book, which is comprehensive, is in itself, a Burmese adventure to read and a valuable source of Burmese cooking art.
