This book will stand alone but it is also a continuation from the earlier book, Women of the Silk. It was great to open this book, and realize that Pei was continuing her journey, but this time into a new life and line of work. The story is set in China after the invasion of the Japanese, which is a time period of history that I know little. Because of the war setting, this volume was more exciting than Gail's first book. I find Tsukiyama's books to be wonderful small treasures. For me it is refreshing to read books that aren't always 600-1000 pages.

Awesome, the paperback was more expensive and I’m glad to know this is going for a great cause.
