Q: Are these puzzles large enough for a 1 year old?

Yes. My 1.5 year old has had them for a few months the and she loves them.

Q: How secure are the knobs on the puzzle pieces? Are they glued on or screwed?

The knobs are glued. I did have to hot-glue one knob. But for the price the puzzles are decent.
