Q: Is the interior of the lid plastic or stainless?

It is plastic but with a silicon insert or liner sort of thing. The water does not come in contact with the lid itself very much because of the silicon insert.

Q: Is there protection against it overheating without liquid inside?

I don't know. I put water in it leaving 1 inch space at top. Then heat to 90C. At 90C it is very hot and you can open without it spewing out. So am usually driving or parked when I use it. It is hot in about 10 to 15 minutes. I unplug at 90C cause it is ready to use. Using that process it won't happen. It works real well. Has not blown fuses. Manufacturer might know. It is not something I would try, but I think it would shut off cause it has a high end cutoff.

Q: would this work in a semi truck?

yes I regularly use these in a semi truck. it will stop contacting the base after 6-12 months of everyday use 2-3 times a day. it fits well if you wedge charging base in the cup holder of freightliner cascadia. I suspect leaving it on the base while driving wears out the electrical contacts over time.
