Invincible Volume 22: Reboot (Invincible, 22)

What if...?
Well, that was a doozy of a volume. There are always a number of ongoing threads but it does feel higher than ever especially as the stakes goes up. Mostly, I want questions answered. We're getting close to the end of the series and a lot has happened. How does it all get resolved? Well, I am certainly fascinated. Also, all the Earth stuff here is just so beautifully done. It feels like something that should be done... And someone did it.

A Glimpse Into the Past While Pushing Toward the Future
Robert Kirkman can do what very few comic authors do these days. He was able to tell a wonderful, nostalgic self-contained story without making the stakes feel any less high and real than usual. Expect the normal high octane action, quirky sense of humor and poignant character moments that have come to define this series but don't be surprised if you shed an occasional tear getting to spend time with friends that have been long gone in this series.

An interesting twist
Invincible often goes in surprising directions. In this one, Mark has a chance to undo some of the bad things that have happened in his life but there's one big catch.

The hunt for Thragg and Mark gets a helluva shock
More unexpected events make this a compulsive read and the title “Reboot?” says a lot. A good single plot dominates the volume and it is well-told and well-illustrated. It's worthwhile reading this and I recommend it to all Invincible fans – and there's more to come, I'm sure.

Things are not going well back on Earth, but that completely depends on the perspective. Perhaps things are going a little too well? Either way, the heroes back home are divided in their loyalties. If Mark ever goes back, he’ll have an interesting homecoming. In the meantime, Eve is not having a good time on Telescria. Either Kirkman intentionally made some commentary here on the trials of a stay-at-home spouse in a environment without a support system, or he couldn’t decide what to do with her beyond “stay-at-home mom.” I’d like to assume it’s the former, but I’ve never been super impressed with Kirkman’s depiction of women in this series. But before I could be too disgruntled with the story line, Kirkman hit me with my favorite plot device. Time travel shenanigans!! Or are they? A visit to a familiar past forces Mark to make a really important choice. We won’t find out until the next volume what affect that will have on the world, but we’re left with a pretty strong cliff-hanger to carry us there.

Reboot indeed!
Reboot indeed! Kirkman takes a story idea that could have been really hokey if handled improperly and executed it to great effect.
