First Aid for Dogs: What to do When Emergencies Happen

Every dog owner should have this book
"First Aid for Dogs" was one of three similar books I bought and is clearly the best, by a head and shoulders margin. It has almost 200 pages of information about a variety of conditions that can occur at home, in the neighborhood, or in the field. It makes very clear what to look for (symptoms) and then gives a helpful "decision tree" (if this is present, then do or look for ---; if that is not present, then look for or do ---). It is also very clear about what options you have in contacting a vet: Now! Same day. Within 24 hrs. Soon. Phone for advice. It very clearly tells how to check symptoms. It covers almost every imaginable condition a dog owner would usually encounter. In the money it will save in trips to the vet that weren't needed, using this book will save its cost many times over. The book is very well organized into sections, Part 1, What to do first, how to make splints, etc,; Part 2, What to do next, checking symptoms, what to observe; Part 3, First aid for various emergencies; Part 4, improving health, how to give/apply meds. The line drawing illustrations are simple, clear, and helpful. The index is comprehensive and useful.By comparison, one of the other books I bought (published by a university press and written by vet school faculty), is higher priced, has about one fourth the pages, and contains much less than a twentieth the information. "Always have injuries examined by a veterinarian" is neither sufficient or particularly helpful advice. For poisoning, it recommends "veterinary advice should be sought."The third first aid book I bought was for outdoor dogs (I have a Lab). It has a little less than half the pages that Fogle's book contains. The topics it covers are adequately treated but I've found only one thing covered that is not also in Fogle's book --(that was emergency treatment of bloat by piercing the stomach).

A basic first aid book for your pet
A basic first aid book for your pet. I assembled a first aid kit for my pets and this book had pretty good reviews so I bought it. It’s basic first aid. However I was hoping it would include first day forecast as well and it did not. Review the book before an emergency so you are well at hand and know what to do. It gives great suggestions on keeping emergency vet information handy to refer to should there be a need to contact your vet immediately. Rather lengthy for a first aid book, but it does cover quite a bit.

my review
The book has lots of resourses for the dog lover to have handy, my only drawback is that the paper the book was printed on is almost like newsprint paper, very cheap and rips easily, I would suggest taking the book apart and putting the pages in page protectors and then into a binder

Thorough Guide
This book is an excellent, thorough guide to basic dog first aid. As others mentioned, the decision chart is wonderful. It's so difficult to decide whether or not to visit the vet or how soon to go and this makes it easier. Diagrams are often confusing but the images are well crafted and very easy to follow.

Good small reference for smaller dog first aid kit
Great reference. I carry it in my service dog's first aid'd box in the car. I should get another for my earthquake kit too.

Extremely Well Done!
This book should be required reading before anyone is issued a dog license. I lost one dog in my lifetime due to ignorance as to what to do. I feel vastly improved with the simple but effective techniques that the book describes.

Quick Guide for Basic First Aid for Dogs
This book is exactly as the title states. Anyone who has taken a First Aid course will notice a lot of cross-over between the emergency treatments for 2-legged and 4-legged casualties. Obviously it would be a good idea to review the book before putting it on the shelf. It would also be a good idea to try following the examination procedures (pg. 39) on your dog while he/she is healthy. Do not expect this book to replace your local veterinarian. The great thing about this book is it's simplicity. It is straight forward, easy to follow and priced appropriately.

good guide in general
I was hoping that it would provide more guidelines on how to handle situations in case we are out of reach of a vet for several hours. However, good guide in general.
