My existing AO Smith B854 pump failed (wouldn't start) and rather try replacing the capacitor I figured I'd try to save some money in the long run with a two speed pump. The B2983 didn't show as a direct replacement but it had the same fitting and horsepower so I figured I'd give it a go. A replacement B854 was around $200 with the B2983 around $300. Fortunately I already had an Intermatic P1353ME timer that would support a two speed pump having had to replace an old mechanical timer a short time ago. The change out was easy enough although the B2983 doesn't have much room for wires. It was quite fiddly to get the four wires into the housing. That's the only reason I only give it four stars. At the same time I replace the pump seals (as strongly recommened) and that was a bit of a disaster. I didn't pay enough attention to how the seal components fitted together when I took the old one off. Tow new seals later and the pumps runs great and no water leaks! The half speed mode consumes around 1/4 of the electricity while still pumping 50% of the original flow rate so I can run it twice as long (achieving the same pool turnover) for half the electriciy. Thanks's to Houston Smart Meter program I can see the savings very graphically. It's alsmost silent on half speed which is another bonus. very pleased with my purchase.

I bought this pump motor after my 15 year old one finally failed. It was a perfect fit, and was easy to install. The problem was that it failed almost exactly one year after I bought it.

Works great- spoke to soon failed a couple weeks ago ? 6 months and broke - will not buy another
