Remanence: Confluence, Book 2

An 'all night read.'
I am just getting back into reading science fiction and this is the second book in the Confluence series. I read the first one last year and have been eagerly waiting for the second one to be published, this arrived on my kindle and I class this one as 'an all night read'. I just couldn't put it down, the characters are well constructed and I felt that I was gradually getting to know them more, I would have liked more input about the other two humans in the crew, but that might be developed in another volume in the series. Alan is in love with Jane possibly the first time he has felt such strong feelings towards a woman and the jealousy he feels towards El Brai and the relationship he has with Jane are handled well. Jane is in love with Alan but has to put the welfare of her crew and ship first and I think that she also loves El Brai on a different level, the latters isolation for so many years in space has left him emotionally needy and he feel possesive and protective of Jane. The brilliance of Alan's technological intelligence contrasted with his slight emotional imaturity was interesting, it made me think. The different emotional responses from differing species was also gone into, the ending was particulary touching. I will look forwards to the next novel in the series I think we have another Anne McCaffrey in this author though with more technology and less emotion, and that from me is high praise.

Intelligent Sci-Fi
Wonderfully vivid continuation of the first book. Rich with characters and a captivating story. Looking forward to Valence the third book. These books don't focus on the science, its merely hinted at as the quality of this series is in the characters, the story and how it all interacts. The whole really is greater than the sum of its parts. No spoilers here, just go read Fluency first if you haven't already, if you enjoy that then this immediately picks up where that ends.

Read it!
Cracking story, a really good sequel to Fluency. It keeps up the pace and draws you in, which meant for me I felt it was too short (it wasn't, and this is a good thing, I just wanted more). Here's to hoping Book 3 comes sooner rather than later. If you're a sci-fi fan, read it. If you haven't read its predecessor (Fluency) read that too. Highly recommended.

Grippingly written
Having received book 1 as part of a special SciFi batch deal, I immediately bought this second book in the series because it was so well written. This sequel was much the same, with a likeable heroine and a good amount of action which carried things along nicely but......the author reminds me of Ben Bova who always seemed to feel a need to make the situation get worse and worse until it was so bad the reader could only feel depressed and almost give up. Then finally it would all turn out all right in the last few pages for the required happy ending. So now I am in a quandary. Do I buy the next book or not? Can I bear yet another build-up of misery in order to reach the finale? I am not sure.

A Fun Sci-fi Romp
Remanence is the follow-up to the excellent Fluency, picking up not long after that book ends and following the story of Jane Holloway and her crew as they return to the Sectilius homeworld to see what the craic is with the plague from the first book. The book's thrust focuses on the Sectilius homeworld and what has become of it mixed in with more of the ongoing love story between Jane and Dr Alan B, which Ei'Bra manages to complicate repeatedly. This was fun, and it was nice to see more of the alien culture and pull some new characters into the story. The main strength of this story is in the worlds Wells has created. The different cultures and technologies are fascinating and help to keep the pages turning even when the main action is a little on the pouting loves side for my taste. The book really hots up towards the end, though, as a new enemy emerges and the crew fights for their lives and the lives of some other creatures stranded in space. In the end, the story is perfectly set up for more fun to come, and I look forward to seeing where this all goes.

Rewarding sequel to Fluency
Another great story from Jennifer Foehner Wells. Continuing the adventures of Jane and the Speroancora's crew.Great blend of proper 'sciencey' Science fiction & a fast paced, imaginative story line.I'm looking forward to reading the next installment.

Just Awesome!
Loved the book, love the series. This is a quality read in a sea of mediocrity. We are introduced to a new species and visit a new world, and find out how customs can cause confusion and misunderstandings.

A worthy successor
I just finished reading Fluency and Remanence back to back. I now have to wait.....Things I liked:An interesting story that left me waiting and hoping. I couldn't predict the next move. I found myself trying to solve the problems with the characters.Science fiction that didn't leave behind the science. The science is rich and understandable.A likeable protagonist. Jane is likeable and relatable. She does verge on superhuman, but I am fine with that. Not retelling the first book in the second. I grow very frustrated with authors who think they need to retell previous books in the current book. If I am invested enough to read the next book, I already know what happened, don't retell it! The short "catch-up" at the beginning was a nice touch. From there the story just moved forward...Yes!The willingness to invent terms and then just use them without constantly redefining them. Reminding just pulls me out of the story. There were a couple slip ups with unnecessary reminders, but overall well done.To sum up, smart writing and a fun story.Things I didn't care for:Unnecessary sexual content. I found it detracted from the book and definitely limited who I would recommend the book to. Most of it was unnecessary and felt contrived to drive a romance along that had no basis beyond sexual desire.Alan. For most of the books he has little character development and is basically unlikable. He is shallow and self centered. I had a had time believing him. I wanted to slap him. He is supposed to be this big love interest and but is unlovable. Only towards of the end does he start to develop and maybe grow up. I sincerely hope that he will grow up in the next book. It is past time.Suggestions for the next book:A little bit more action. The second book spent a bit too long stranded on a planet. We know the characters fairly well now. I want to know more about this universe they are in and the bigger forces at play.Alan to grow up or move out.Overall, an excellent series and I look forward to the next installment.

Stunning
No Spoilers...I love finding a new author whose first book slams me as a page turner. Then when the second book not only does the same, but hits you with all the feels... well, how can you possibly beat that? You cannot.Off to grab book three.

A great second book
I began this book expecting it to be a nice sequel to the first book in the series. By the author's own admission, writing a great second book is often a problem. After all, I really enjoyed the excitement of first contact, the progression of the heroine and all the twists and turns before arriving at a great conclusion.Fortunately for the author, she was wrong. This book started off with a synopsis of book one. While I read it not too long ago, it quickly brought me up to speed and made a nice bridge to the second book. This was really appreciated. This book started relatively sedately and in a predictable manner but this changed quickly. There were a number of interesting challenges and introduction of new characters as well as development of the old ones. Later in the book, just as I could see the conclusion, which I thought was going to be disappointing and boring, the author took us on a journey into the quirkiness of different alien species and laid the groundwork for book three. I will leave the details of that for the reader to discover. There is much to enjoy in this book from action to well-developed characters to ups and downs of romance and, as I said, even the quirkiness of alien species.Looking forward to the new book.

Spellbound from page 1.
Do read the 1st book first. When I finished it, I felt like "....and now?...Please don't leave me hanging here like that... but when I received the @mail that the 2nd book Remanence was out, it was a done deal right from the beginning. Lady, lady you can write! To cut a long story short: I literally devoured the follow-up within no time. I was spellbound right from the beginning to the very end. Honestly: I can't wait to get my hands on the next book. One thing: I'd wish for the movie to come out very soon, but that may be only a nice fantasy as Avatar-2 is. :) Great Job Mrs. Foehner-Wells Great Job! Keep on going :-)
