Wayfarers Series 4 Books Collection Set by Becky Chambers (The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, A Closed and Common Orbit, Record of a Spaceborn Few & To Be Taught, If Fortunate)

Becky Chambers writes heartfelt, feel good, inclusive sci-fi. They are character-driven books that ponder what it means to be a sapient species, whether human, artificially intelligent, or other. They should be read by computer programmers as well as philosophers. I read the first book in the series as well as her book Psalm for the Wild Built. Both of them were such thoughtful and delightful books that I had to get the rest. I'm halfway through the second book of the Wayfarers series. I am not disappointed. My only minor complaint was that this collection did not come with a box to house the four books.

World building and character development are phenomenal. Definitely for a reader that enjoys a heavy focus on character development in place of a fast paced, high drama stories.**NOTE** 3 of the 4 books are part of the series, the fourth is a stand alone book. The fourth book on the series you have to buy separately. However, this is the best price option.

Fun, touching and original

Have not had the time to read them yet but the set came in goods shape !

The first novel was published in 2015 and is already one of the most loved paperbacks at the local library. Character-relationship centric writing, orbiting the nuances of multi-species culture and cooperation. Sometimes tense and often hilarious- please read to the part where a group of sapient species describe what cheese is, like a horror story.It has a 90% chance of making your day.

This is a decent series but the fourth book included is not actually the fourth book in the series. Confused? Yeah, me too. But I did order book four separately and now have the complete series. I am not sure why Amazon packages the wrong book (ie not officially part of the wayfarer series) with the first three books but plan on the extra book purchase if you want it all.

I have never read anything like this, and I read a lot of science fiction. It is as if the author could imagine a world where people may realize the benefits of cooperating with one another, instead of engaging in eternal competition. You know, like we might see in families, among lovers, and with people to whom we feel loyal. Hopeful stuff. Don't get me wrong, in her future there are still "bad guys", it is just that they are not the center of the narrative. I feel hopeful about this future, & not just in some sugar coated "feel good" way. The science stuff is grounded in real science, and the interspecies relationships appear grounded as well, though I admit my personal experience of such is limited. I am in awe of this writer. If only we could get her to write a little faster than we can read.

Disliked not having more! Books can be read in any order. Loved the different characters and the aliens seemed relatable. Very enjoyable!

Wenn man sich die Biografie von Becky Chambers anschaut kommt das auch nicht von ungefähr: Ihre MutterAstrobiologin, ihr Vater Luft- und Raumfahrttechniker.Ich habe bei Science Fiction Büchern leider öfter das Gefühl, dass sich die Autor:innen nicht genug mit der Materie auseinander gesetzt haben, über die sie schreiben. Bei den Wayfarer Büchern war das Gegenteil der Fall. Die Geschichten, die in „Der lange Weg zu einem kleinen zornigen Planeten“ und den Folgebänden erzählt werden wirken fundiert und gut recherchiert. Gleichzeitig schafft die Autorin es, die wissenschaftlichen Aspekte anschaulich, aber auch nicht zu simpel zu beschreiben.Figuren und ihre DynamikZiemlich gut gefallen hat mir die Crew der Wayfarer und ihre Dynamik untereinander. Auf dem Schiff leben Mitglieder der verschiedensten Spezien mit einer KI zusammen. Das Buch lebt mehr von den zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen – oder eher den Beziehungen der verschiedenen Individuen untereinander – als von brutalen, verlustreichen Kämpfen. Becky Chambers beschreibt die Protagonist:innen dabei so bildhaft, dass es mir beim Lesen leicht gefallen ist, sie mir bildlich vorzustellen und sowohl ein Gespür für die verschiedenen Spezien als auch Individuen zu bekommen. Besonders auffallend ist dabei, dass tatsächlich alle Crewmitglieder ihre eigene Geschichte erzählen und auch den Raum dafür eingeräumt bekommen. Dadurch spielt außer der an sich schon spannenden Geschichte, mit ihrer nicht gerade unkomplexen, aber doch sehr logischen Handlung, auch die Botschaft von Toleranz, Freundschaft und Loyalität eine wichtige Rolle in dem Roman.Ich habe dieses Buch auf jeden Fall in Rekordzeit verschlungen und habe sofort mit Band zwei angefangen, als ich den ersten beendet hatte. Der und auch der dritte Band der vierteiligen Reihe letztlich auch noch besser gefallen als der Erste.Insgesamt hat mir Becky Chambers mit ihrem großartigen Debüt und der Wayfarer-Reihe im Allgemeinen dafür gesorgt, dass ich meine Liebe für das Genre Science Fiction nach einer ganzen Weile endlich wiederentdeckt habe. Deshalb gehe ich auch davon aus, dass es sich gut als Einsteigerwerk eignet. So oder so: Eine ganz große Empfehlung für alle, die sich für das All, die Sterne, Aliens, KIs oder einfach nur ein Buch mit bunt durchmischten Figuren interessieren.

These are such terrific books. Read the first one "The long way to a small angry planet" and LOVED it. The feeling of being in a place was so good you feel you could go there. The characters are real, the situations true, the aliens pretty alien. Not sure about bugburgers. But in it's context, true as well. Cannot recommend it enough. Provided you love Sci fi. Had to buy the whole set. I'm eking them out so they don't finish too soon.

It's a really nice book series that kills a lot of time. Good overall :)

I purchased the book series quite some time ago. Great read, great storyline and character development.Although I have to say Hodder & Stoughton should do a better job in quality control. Almost every second page has printing issues and I get a headache reading the pages.

Every second page was unreadable due to a shift of the page when it was printed. I'll revisit this review once my replacement books arrive.Edit: the replacement had the same issues. I'll be purchasing these books individually.
