Durability is its key selling point
If there’s one item to keep an eye on if you own a bike it’s the chain. Keeping it lubricated and not allowing it to get gunked up, and changing it at the correct time by regularly checking with a chain stretch tool before it causes expensive damage to the chain rings or cassette is essential. Keeping a chain on standby and changing well before it has chance to empty your pockets is one of the essential maintenance items on a bike, I’ve made that error in the past when less experience, so spotting this Alphatrail™ 10-Speed Bike Chain offered under the Amazon Vine programme it was quickly ordered. The product information states that the chain has a guaranteed mileage of 5000 kilometres and states it’ll probably last for 7000 – that’s around 84 miles a week every week over a year, a total and easily reached by a dedicated club cyclist, showing despite that product information claiming that “Its lifetime is up to 8 times longer than that of conventional chains” it’s really worthwhile keeping a weekly eye on things whilst keeping clean and lightly oiled. All through 5-8 speed bikes the chain remained the same width; and that’s what you are likely to find on lower end bikes. However as road chains have progressed through 9, 10 and now 11 speed each time they have become progressively narrower, so ensuring you have the right width chain is essential. My compact geared road bike is 10 speed Campagnolo™, and it’s really great to see the product information confirm that this chain will work equally well with rival systems Shimano™ or Sram™, which are pretty much the makes you’ll find on the vast majority of bikes unless it’s extremely esoteric. It’ll also work with higher end mountain bikes too. It’s easy to see on this well-manufactured chain, with ‘10S’ and ’10 speed chain’ stamped into each of the 116 links provided. Each of the links moves well individually, with the chain pre-coated with light oil which feels similar to GT85™ which ensures free and easy movement thanks to its PTFE content. You may not need all those links particularly for the relatively small 50/34 chain rings used on compact road bikes like mine, or the even smaller ones used on mountain bikes, so you’ll need to count the links of the old chain you are removing and use a chain tool to copy the number else you’ll undoubtedly have slippage issues. It comes complete with a quick release fixing that make it easy to install once you have identified the right number of links for your bike. This is undoubtedly a well made chain, and the price of £24.95 and claimed longevity reflect that you aren’t buying a basic item. I like that it fitted easily, that the quick release stayed put once clicked into place, that it engaged readily with my chain rings and cassette and shifts between gears smoothly. I also like that it has the size stamped on each link – important if you run more than one bike like I do with my others all 9-speed. If I was storing this as a spare with other chains of different sizes not having that comfort that I’d immediately picked up the right chain size off the shelf would be a worry – no such concerns here. I like that it’s not uni-directional, which given my limited mechanical ability would bound to be an issue. The acid test is always warily putting pressure on the pedals for the first time up a gradient – if you’ve got it wrong you’ll quickly and painfully know. I’m glad to report everything worked fine. A nice chain, not the cheapest you can find but then durability is its key selling point.

Seems Pretty Good
I've fitted this to my SRAM Rival/Force 10-seed set up. Installation was pretty easy. The chain was easy to break and the quick link clicked into place with little pressure. It's not clear to me whether the quick link is meant to be removable (as per KMC). The chain seems to work well. It's pre-oiled and non-directional, which are nice touches. it runs smoothly and quietly and changes are very slick. All good so far, though the real test will be how it survives the winter. The manufacturers are claiming a life of 7,000 km, which seems quite ambitious, especially on UK roads. I tend to ditch my chains at the end of the summer/winter season regardless of wear.Anyway, all good so far. The price is a little bit of an issue as it currently costs quite a bit more than a SRAM original or a KMC version. The manufacturers may find it difficult to wean people from their preferred brand unless they are competitive on price.

Very well made chain, free water bottle
This is a really well made chain that is supplied with a quick release fixing which makes it a lot quicker to install.I do most of my bike maintenance myself and regularly change my own chains.I tend to choose Shimano Ultegra and they have always been good so I will be interested to see how this chain performs. I'm attracted to the claims that it is stronger than conventional chains but obviously only time will tell. My Ultegra chain weighs in at 267g whereas this chain weighs 290g so this maybe a factor to consider for the cycling community that are obsessed with the weight of their bikes. I use my bikes to commute to work and prefer a chain to last longer between replacement as a priority so am hoping that this chain will out perform my current choice. What I really like is the instructions, not only do you get links for YouTube videos advising on installation but you also get the chance to win Amazon vouchers and claim a free water bottle which is a nice touch.Highly recommend.

Superb!
The chain comes in a well presented box and is located inside a plastic sealed pouch within.Easy to fit with 2 pairs of chain links included so you get one spare, I cleaned the bike down and degreased the chain rings before fitting the chain, the chain is greased ready but I also added chain lube.Decent shifting ability and pretty silent under load, I fitted it to my 20speed giant MTB with a Shiamano Deore setup.Included in the box is an information booklet with links inside to an online installation video if required, instructions on how to claim a free Tritan drinks bottle and 10% off your next order, I thought this was a nice touch.Overall good quality and seems well made, one thing to take note when fitting is that the chain links have a groove on the pins so make sure the plates are pulled into this groove tight before finishing, Thank you.

Will be great to see if this last as long as it’s claimed to
I’ve been using this with a 10 speed shimano tiagra group set and it works just as well as the original. It’s easier to install thanks to the quick link and seemed to be easy enough to remove a few links with a decent chain tool.It feels smooth and gear changes are good there’s no crunching noises once indexed correctly. Just make sure you oil it on a regular basis and you probably can’t go wrong. As for value for money you can get an original chain cheaper but if this hold up longer then it will be a worthy investment. I will update this review once it’s reached the end of its life. To note I’ve put in on with a brand new group set so it will be a true test of its performance.

Haltbar!
