Speed Mathematics 3rd Edition, Kindle Edition

I have read the first 6 chapters so far. It surely has a different approach from other books on this topic that I have read. For some multiplication problems that I have done so far, the approach in this book seems to definitely be simpler and hence faster than others. I am enjoying this book!

I own a fair number of books on fairly esoteric subjects such as mnemonics and mental mathematics. In the speed math category, there tends to be a trade off between easily absorbed (Arthur Benjamin's "Secrets of Mental Math") and more rigorous and powerful (e.g., Trachtenberg's opus). This book finds a middle way and I while I recommend the others for what they do well, I most heartily recommend this book for its systematic use of relatively few techniques derivable from algebraic axioms. Anyway, if you are interested in the subject buy this book. I think a motivated 5th grader could master much of this and change the arc of their life in the process. I also think most adults could benefit enormously as well. It will require practice - but the practice will improve the practitioner in many ways (including general visualization and mental focus) and likely have incalculable paybacks.

This is the go-to book in a field replete with lots of pretentious junk. Handley really does take you patiently by the hand and makes sure you understand the tricks of the trade. However, I would like even more examples -- not much explanation needed, since that's in this book. How about a giant book of solved arithmetic problems? I looked for one, and didn't find one that felt right for me. Certainly such a book would be easy to put together, and I wouldn't pay much for it, but I would use the heck out of it. No word problems, just computation drills up the wazoo.

When I first got this book I was not sure if it would have anything that would separate it from all the other books that are similar in topic. I am happy to say it does. The early part of the book relating to multiplication and division shows a very easy and useful method. The book was written to cater to a diverse audience in regard to their current skill level. For that reason some sections may seem to not be relevant to you. That is fine. Skip those that you feel comfortable with and continue on. For me I am reading the whole book and then going back through it again and pull out the special nuggets that I have not seen in other books.In summary for anyone wanting to get better at math or who wants to learn that there is more than one way to skin a cat (solve a math problem). This is a goldmine and I highly recommend it. You will be surprised just how much you can improve in math in a short time with these techniques.

I was one of those kids who avoided math and did poorly at it, all I can say is that I wish I had this book back then.

A great tool for keeping the brain working! I bet it would help young kids to have this learning to excel at school. I consider it fun!

Ever since I bought the 'Trachtenberg system of Mathematics years ago, I was happy with my ability to do mental arithmatics, till I came acrossthis book by Mr Handley, it is an extension to what was available and I envy those taught by him.A must for every library where children have access or the'young at heart'

excellent book. it is amazing how simple and quickly you can calculate. you have to put a little practice in, but when you get used to the calculations you will not only amaze other people, but you will also amaze yourself how good you get.
