I researched this and if you contact Rishi you can get the full report. They report their teabag is very safe and non toxic and is derived from plants. The material is a plant based starch type material called polylactic acid (PLA). The bags contain no plastics and hence no plasticizers such as phthalates or BPA. Rishi states in their website that they can provide test data report showing that on request. They state the bags are not derived from petroleum but rather plants. No plastics or plasticizers. The bags do not contain any plant DNA and are biodegradable but do not breakdown in the hot water in your tea cup. The string is not glued to the bag but is ultrasonically sealed to it. The bags contain no plastics, glues, staples or metals per Rishi. Assuming this starch material from plants (PLA) is nontoxic which Rishi attests to it being safe, non-toxic, and hypo allegenic (a good thing); the Rishi bags would appear, based on Rishi statements, to be one of the safer bags on the market based on the information from Rishi and their statements.
