Not only did Tommy Lee Jones direct and star in the film, he was also the music supervisor, personally selecting the composer and tracks. Marco Beltrami's score is a thing of beauty - lovingly crafted and simply breathtaking. He combines his own post-minimalist sensibilities with Mexican folk music and the acoutrements of the traditional Western to create a dark, evocative and moving piece that is somewhat reminiscent of Elliot Goldenthal's Oscar winnning soundtrack to 'Frida', but this is no pale imitation, but a stunningly original work that acts as a fitting companion piece to Beltrami's own Oscar nominated '3.10 to Yuma' score. You might only get 32 minutes of the score on the disc, but those 32 minutes underline Beltrami's position as the pre-eminent film composer of his generation.
