The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own

Classic advice
The subhead reads "A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own." This book delivers. Author Garcia makes it clear that this list is HER list, and that every woman will have a somewhat different collection of apparel essentials. But this is a good place to start. The list is in alphabetical order (see below). Each listing has a description and full-color illustration of the item. Many have a sidebar called Fashion 101, which is a short history of the product, often with quotes. Garcia also includes Fun Facts, her own personal favorite brands, and many fashion tips.Especially fun are "Great Moments" segments. Great Moments in men's white shirts include Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday , Elizabeth Taylor in Giant , Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman and Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction .The best thing about this book is how it elevates timeless quality over of-the-moment fads. My 14-year-old daughter looked at The One Hundred and then said she wants to save up and buy maybe one piece every other month or so, so she'll have a good collection when she gets out of high school. If a book can pass along that kind of advice to teens, I'm all for it!Here are the chapters:A: A-line Dress, Animal Print, Ankle Bootie, AviatorsB: Ballet Flat, Bangles, Belts, Bikini, BlackBerry, Black Opaque Tights, Blazer, Boyfriend Cardigan, BroochC: Cable-Knit Sweater, Caftan, Camel Coat, Cape, Cashmere Sweater, Charm Bracelet, Clutch, Cocktail Ring, Converse, Cosmetics Bag, Cowboy Boots, CuffD, E, F: Denim Jacket, Diamond Studs, Driving Shoe, Espadrilles, Evening Gown, Exotic Skin Bag, Fishnets, Frye Harness Boot, FurG, H, I: Gentlemen's Hat, Gloves, Havaianas, Hobo Bag, Hoop Earrings, Investment Bag, iPodJ, K, L: Jeans, Jewelry Pouches, Khakis, Knee Boots, Leather Pants, Lingerie, Little Black Dress, Little White Dress, L.L. Good Style Guide
A handy guide to the 100 pieces every woman should have in her wardrobe (or handbag). This list not only includes apparel, but also accessories, shoes, the Crackberry, the iPod, sunglasses, various kinds of hats, makeup, skincare, lingerie, and prints, patterns and colors to include in planning your style. Ms. Garcia provides resources where one can find the items she mentions, at both designer and budget price points. She recommends spending the money for a really good quality item that's going to last you a long time and remain current, and saving on trendier items or items that are not meant to last that long. The book is divided up by letters of the alphabet, generally three at a time. Once again, as is the case with all Ms. Garcia's books, the lavish illustrations were done by Ruben Toledo, and they are fabulous.

Great guide to completing your wardrobe
This is not a book about how to build a wardrobe from scratch, although you can make several outfits from the pieces listed here. What this is, is a book about the pieces that will complete your wardrobe, filling the gaps you may not have even realized were there. There are major pieces, like a man's white shirt, a suit, a lovely robe, wide-legged pants. There are minor pieces, like Frye boots and sunglasses. There are jewelery suggestions, dress suggestions, handbag suggestions, outerwear suggestions.I'll admit that I'm never going to own all 100 items. I don't have any interest in owning fur, real or fake. I can't walk in stilettos, and heaven knows I've tried. But then, that's my style and I certainly don't think Nina Garcia is saying that you *must* have all 100 pieces to be stylish, just that these 100 pieces can help you to be as stylish as you choose. When I received the book, I discovered that I already had about 25 of the pieces Nina describes. But I wasn't wearing or using most of them. I hauled them all out and dusted them off and made a commitment to using them. Surprise! It isn't that hard to pin a brooch to the lapel of your winter coat, or remember to wear your pearls once a week (they do better with being worn more often).Since buying the book, I've made a few purchases. A pea coat, which nicely fills in the gap between my long wool winter coat and my parka. Ballet flats, which work well with both pants and skirts to tone down the formality of the look. (Besides, they are comfortable for walking!) A pair of Vans, in grey suede, which have become my go-to casual shoes, instead of grungy running shoes. And I've downloaded her suggested fashion oriented playlist for my IPod and it's a hoot to listen to. My new wide-leg trousers fit great and fill the gap in my wardrobe of "I don't know what to wear to the a) Eagle Scout ceremony, b) Betty's lunch to discuss our reunion next year and c) dinner with the aunts next Sunday."The pieces cover a huge price range, from an L.L. Bean tote to an investment handbag. Even if you don't have a lot of money, you can start to slowly add in a few pieces here and there. My next goals are espadrilles for the summer and a good denim jacket--again, these will fill in gaps in my closet I knew about, but didn't know how to fill.

A must read
These books should be read as a set I feel. But they are also so inspiring as separate books. You will enjoy them. She’s got a great style of writing. Super fun and educational. I’ve enjoyed them much more than I thought I would. Can’t wait for my daughters to read them. ❤️
