Great information for parents, teachers and therapists
With 25+ combined years in mental health and special education, I learned SO much in this book. With my daughter diagnosed as a teenager inattentive ADHD, it helped me to better understand and parent her and get my other daughters early diagnosis.

Comprehensive, informative, and objective
My 16 yo teen was diagnosed with ADHD last month. Searching the internet for information was overwhelming and discouraging, with conflicting information written by people who spoke of their opinions as fact. I first listened to this on audiobook through my library, but found it so helpful that I bought the paperback. I wanted to see the bibliography and references to studies that of course was not in the audiobook. It was clearly written and answers questions I had about causes, treatments, specific medications, and navigating ADD as a family. The author writes with compassion but also is careful to reference research for each chapter to support his information. Apparently, this is Phelan’s third edition and he updated it with the latest research. Highly recommend.Edited to add on April 2020: I was able to use this book to ask the pediatrician about specific medication. As many people with ADHD, my daughter had to try different medication to find the best fit. At one appointment with the pediatrician a year after her diagnosis, I bookmarked the chapter about medication and showed it to him, asking what he thought about one that was listed in the chapter. I think that having a book to show the doctor rather than quoting a website gave my question more credibility. The doctor was open to changing her medication and it helped quite a bit. We’re not a family who pushes her to take ADHD medicine, but we went through a long process to see if it’s a tool that would help her. As she now prepares to go to college, she feels more prepared to manage the challenging subjects. I still think that this book went a long way in helping us understand ADHD and how to help her. Another book I recommend is Faster Than Normal by Peter Shankman who writes from his experience about ADHD as an advantage.

Not so great
Ok not great. Pushes using medication. States other therapies besides medicine do not work but gives no concrete evidence to this. Needs to have more derails and give more examples. Easy to read but not an information packed book.
