I don't know what you need to clean off. I heat the iron with a torch which burns off any residue but there is no residue form a previous use. After it cools I could wipe it with a cloth.

I have an outdoor fire pit hooked up to propane to heat it up. I practiced over 20 times on a 2×4 before I actually branded what I wanted. You only get one shot, so practice different ways like a roll from left to right, thats how I was able to get a clear brand. Holding straight down doesn't work like you think it should. It cools quick when it's pulled from the fire so you need to have the position marked and ready (on a solid surface so it doesn't move). Best of luck!
