Silva Ranger 2.0 Compass

I have been using Silva compass products for over 40 years without any issues. Unfortunately having bought this Ranger compass I can confirm that the item I received was poorly manufactured with a bezel that seemed to be fitted off centre. This meant that when set to 270 degrees the North arrow and gridlines were not at 90 degrees to the compass body! Consequently measurements using the compass are approximately 2 degrees out of true. The inbuilt clinometer was also affected and inaccurate. Silva compasses used to be second to none in my opinion but sadly if my example is representative of current quality then that is no longer true in my opinion. I returned it for a refund and then bought a Suunto compass instead.

Great reliable compass, compact and light, which is a great thing. Love the laniard, very handy when trying to understand distances. Use it regularly for hiking, canoeing, fishing and hunting.

The one I got is quite nice with glowing sections that make it easy to see in the dark which way the compass is pointing. The glow paint does need to be charged with a bright light first though. Brightness from my laptop screen wouldn't do, but holding the compass up to the overhead did. Degrees are less easy to see, so you will likely need to set your bearing with a light. Thanks.

I haven’t taken this compass into the wilds yet, but my overall impression is excellent. After my Suunto A-10 baseplate compass started losing its markings (they are beginning to rub off from being in my pack for a few years, making the baseplate essentially useless), I started looking for a better compass with etched or hot stamped markings. I spent hours looking for this information, and no product listings or even packaging mention this important feature. I took a chance on this Silva, and am glad I did.In the user manual (which you can download from their website, see photo of package for that info) it specifically states that most Silva compasses have “hot stamped” markings. I can verify this one does, as you can feel the texture of the markings. It also has little rubber feet to reduce friction contact with the actual baseplate.The declination adjustment is easy to use (with the included tiny screwdriver tip concealed in the lanyard breakaway joint), the Clinometer is intuitive, and the overall feel is sturdy but not heavy.
