String is slightly loose, but overall a good buy.
Very good value overall, and my kid likes it. My nephews have a competing product, and it seems slightly better. This product's quality is there and good for the price. The difference I've notice between this product and others I've seen that are better, is the string that attaches the ball. The Toysmith version has a slightly thicker string, and the knot at the end of the ball does not fit tightly. As the ball is in motion, the string is able to move between the slot in the ball, which affects the overall velocity and maneuvering. This makes movement less precise and tricks harder when it comes to controlling the ball. With other products, the ball is pretty well tethered to the ball ball within the slot, and the string is slightly thinner, and the movement seems more precise. That said, it's more that good enough for average use or starting out, you can get a more expensive one if you become more involved with the game. I would recommend the product.

not bad
I like the two tone bamboo, i'm not sure how heavy a real kendama ball is but this one is hefty. The basic construction is nice, but i can see some rough areas that weren't shaved out of the cup areas, for example my ozara (large cup) had lines that weren't smoothed out. So i can see why these kendama's are slightly cheaper then the ones from Japan. But don't let that deter you, overall they work, and this one looks better then most out there for this price, so 4 stars. Knocked off 1 star just because i think just a little more work in the sanding process and these would be pretty good.

Something kids can play with by themselves.
The kids are having a lot of fun with these Kendama things. I only gave it four stars because, I can't do it! The quality seems good. I like that there is no paint to peel or chip as some other people have mentioned about some other Kendamas. It was a good purchase. Kendamas are becoming more popular as people hear about them. They are more challenging than the old ball on a string toys of yore. They may be a little too challenging for five and six year olds who may get discouraged before they start having fun with it. I would purchase them again.

Fun and inexpensive
Very good quality and my 12 year old loves it. He plays with it every day and the string broke after about 3 weeks. I went ahead and bought him extra strings (very inexpensive) because I heard it is a very common occurrence with any Kendama. I even played it and it is quite fun. I would suggest purchasing extra strings at the same time because it is easy to see when the string wears down and needs replacing. The ball is hard and if the string breaks while playing it could hurt someone (or break something). There are youtube video's that show the skill involved and teach how to do certain tricks. Overall it's an inexpensive fun way to pass the time

Excellent so far! Everybody wants one!
I ordered one of these for my son after he saw another child playing with it at a softball game. Next thing I know, a handful of parents are asking me where I found it, can I buy some for them. So far I've ordered almost 10 of these. The younger kids (6-10 yr olds) want them first, then older sibs keep borrowing them which starts fights so we end up ordering more for the older kids (13-15). Even my husband gets a kick out of playing with it. Good hand-eye coordination, no charger required. The bamboo has held up very well through heavy usage, and unlike another reviewer, we've had no trouble with the string. So far so good...I'm thinking they'll make a good stocking stuffer, too ;-)

Good material and worksmanship, poor assembly. Dont buy unless you plan to restring.
I bought two of these, one as a gift and the other for myself. This review is not a "he/she loved the gift" baloney, but rather it is first hand experience. Also, because I got two, the issues I mention are common and not a 1 in a millian fluke. All cons listed where found on both kendama toys.Pros:- verry cool look.- the ken and the dama seem well built- the string was a fine lengh and nice quality- all cups are good and spiking is ok besides a issue you'll see laterCons:- the dama(ball) was attached with a horrible loose knot that did come undone during initial play.- the kendama is beadless (they are instead using a nylon washer that dirupts the flow and feel of spike tricks)Pro or con (depends on person):- 2 out of the 2 I bought where set up for lefthanded use. I needed to convert to right handed. The silver lining:- all potential problems are eliminated if you use a restring kit with beads. (That is what I did and now I love it)

This is a unique toy made popular in Japan. I read about it one day and purchased one for my kids who are at that age where they are too old for most toys but still enjoy a fun challenging game. This one is solid wood and very well-made. I also like that it is not painted, so there is no paint to chip off from playing with it. It is a difficult challenge (for us anyway), but it is really fun for adults and children to attempt to conquer it.

Simple and fun, be careful not to get addicted
I've been wanting one of these for a long time now, and if I don't pay attention I can be at it for a long time trying to catch the ball and flip the kendama to catch it again multiple times. Sometimes I try to see how many catches I can chain together. I have to admit that for some reason, I really want to get good at this thing, enough to be considered a "pro". Reminds me of what it is to have old school and simple fun like when I was a kid.
