great book
I have bought many, many copies of this book for many years. I give it away, I'm so impressed with it. It was written many years ago buy a Vermont folk doctor. All his experiments on livestock are not interesting, but the testimonies and outcomes are. I read it for the first time in the 1970's, and I have followed his advice ever since. To sum it up, apple cidar vinegar and honey keep your body ph in balance. I mix it in my juice, or tea. You can buy the vinegar capsules from the health food store. As a result of daily taking the vinegar I have energy. I'm 78 years old and I have no arthritis, I have all my own teeth and plenty of hair. My weight has been a steady 125 lbs since taking the vinegar. I mow my own grass and use the weed wacker. My mind is sharp and I don't have any old age diseases. I have never had surgery. I do not have diabetes, heart disease, cancer or anything else that runs in my family. It is inexpensive. I buy plain ole Heinz vinegar at the grocery store. I won't stop the vinegar for anything.

Fascinating health insights from the past, still vital today
I'd postponed buying this book because I knew the information would be dated to the 1950s and earlier. However, when yet another person described her "miracle cure" and referred to something in this book... well, I had to see if Dr. Jarvis' advice was that good.It is.It's an older book with some amusing cultural references. Some dry humor shows through, but this is a "just the facts, ma'am" kind of book, loaded with useful information. It's also very loosely organized. I recommend reading it with a highlighter pen at hand. Otherwise, it can take awhile to locate the advice a second time. This book is general enough for almost everyone with an interest in health and natural remedies, but it'll be most interesting to people with hypothyroid issues. Oh, that's not the only topic Dr. Jarvis talks about, but -- as someone with low-grade hypothyroid issues -- when a book talks at length about kelp and Lugol's oil, I know it might relate to thyroid function. The potassium issue also interested me, and Dr. Jarvis describes it in fresh, down-to-earth (pun intended) terms. All in all, this is a truly amazing little book. While the stories are mostly anecdotal, they're backed up by the author's animal research... and surprisingly convincing. The use of apple cider vinegar to lose inches (not necessarily weight) caught my attention. I now start my day with the dosage recommended in this book. (After all, it's vinegar in small amounts... it's certainly worth a try.)The castor oil advice was an instant winner. I've had a "liver spot" on one cheek since the birth of my middle child, and -- overnight -- the spot was at least 50% lighter and, today, my skin practically glows thanks to Dr. Jarvis' simple advice. (The tricky part was finding castor oil. I'm in rural New Hampshire and I expected to find this old-time remedy at the grocery store or pharmacy, but nobody carried it. Amazon does - NOW Solutions Castor Oil, 100 % Pure, 16 ounce )Health-conscious readers will read between the lines and recognize advice that's been fine-tuned in more recent years. However, the tried-and-true, simple version is still reliable. Dr. Jarvis' recommendations are holistic and require only the simplest foods and natural ingredients. No major lifestyle changes or expensive products are necessary to see if Dr. Jarvis' advice will work for you.I wish I'd read this book long ago.

and have been loved it ever since
This is the 3rd or 4th copy I have purchased over the years. I keep wearing them out! Found my first copy in a used book store, and have been loved it ever since. Was so happy to find it here! My other copies were all used and well-read. Glad to have one that is brand new, because I still love to read the wisdom by the good doctor, Dr. Jarvis. He was an old time country physician, who gained his wisdom by observing the way his animals and children ate, and how their diet affected their health. It is a short, easy read, but it will change your life for the better!

It this all there is in this book...really? It needs a good editor...
I was SO juiced and psyched to get this book. Then it came. What? Small...sorta fits in your back pocket. Then...I started to read it. All I could says was..."Someone needed to edit it." It would have read better, been less redundant, and maybe even sport a cleaner typeface.I bought it for what other reviewers said it had about castor oil. There is hardly anything about castor oil in it...including the castor packs, how to make them and what to use it for.Disappointed! There also seems to be some conflicting info with honey and kids. I will have to type out what I can glean from that book and look for one that has been better written with more down home remedies. Why did this get 5 stars???

Everyone should read this book before taking any medication.....No side effects and amazing results. I initially used the cider vinegar and honey for an acid reflex problem that I could not get rid of for 3 days. As soon as I took the cider vinegar and honey it was gone. I take it 2 times a day and no more problems. AND to my surprise I have NO sinus issues....I lived my INTIRE life suffering from sinusitis that not gave me severe head aches, stuffed sinuses that showed red hot spots above each eye brow. This of course thinking clearly a problem since oxygen was not flowing as it should. For the VERY FIRST TIME in my life I REALY ENJOYED the FALL WEATHER. I am allergic to trees, mold, dust, ext.. A friend lent me her book and I am SO VERY THANKFUL to her because I am really enjoying life so much more then ever!!! It also helps arthritis and some other problems you may have. READ it you won't e sorry!!!

Iodine, add to your diet or remain ill and energy depleted.
A superb little book written by a caring health-care professional. Medicine today is about treating illness using ever more toxic concoctions, this was not the case with Dr Jarvis, he offered advice to keep his patients healthy, advice he acquired not from medical text books but from folk-medicine, from the wise women who went before him. Women looked after the health of their families, with good food, sown on nutrientionally rich soil, beneficial herbs and of course iodine, all that you required to stay healthy. What do we have today, food grown on nutrientionally depleted soil, full of pesticides and when we become ill our doctors are not interested in the cause of our illness, they just prescribe toxic chemicals that if we are lucky may alleviate our symptoms for a while, but these symptoms will return as the cause of our ill-health hasn't been addressed. Doctors become ever busier, patients sicker but the drug companies become ever richer.Take back your healthcare into your own hands, grow your own organic food if you can, even in pots on your windowsill, and if not this year aim for next year when your energy has returned. In order for your energy to return read about 'The Iodine Crisis' and include this essential trace element in your diet and start on your road to recovery.
