An Excellent Research and a Leading read in its field
This book is the first of its kind in English. Not only does it diligently comment upon the earliest sources of traditions, but the explanations and elaborations of the author also goes far beyond any other book on the subject matter. This rightly deserves to be the authority for the beliefs of Sunnis.Where this topic has been severely misunderstood by fantasy and fiction by a number of groups, this book casts a realistic light and brings forth important details in a clear structured way, making it easier for the reader to understand but also building upon the learnings of another of the Author's book "An introduction to the sciences of Hadith" Where the theory is put into practise making a very enjoyable read.

excellent and easy to read study
Excellent work, with a small introduction to the science of Hadith to understand the technical terms used by the author to judge the narrations in Kitab Al-Fitan of Nuaim ibn Hammad. It also replies to western academics such as Margoliouth and Madelung claims on the issue of the Mahdi. A must read book on this topic.

Fascinating discussion of hadiths & history
The concept of the Mahdi is much stronger in Shia Islam than in Sunni Islam. This study gives a great summary of classical Sunni thinking on the issue, with analysis of hadiths as well as a fascinating history of dozens of "claimants to the title of Mahdi" throughout the history of Islam. Highly-recommended.
