Cool Jazz: Jazz Piano Solos Series Volume 5

This might be my favorite of the series thus far, it has fantastic transcriptions of some great jazz songs. They aren't too lengthy, but they also feel full. There are also several spots that work well for improvising also, before the Coda in "All Blues".

Easy and fun

Brand new sheet music book. Arrived quickly. Great arrangements.

I'm a fan of this series. They present nice, playable arrangements of well-known songs, with a little bit of (written out) "improvisation" in case you need help in getting away from the melody. My only complaint: too many of the same songs crop up in different books. If you're only going to buy one book in the series, then obviously that wouldn't bother you, but if you want to buy several, it's starts to get annoying to see songs you've already paid for presented again and again. Not sure why this is considered an acceptable practice in publishing.

Very good arrangement, not too difficult but still challenging to play. This book is written with note by note improvization for both hands. Great book for beginner jazz piano player.

Not sure I get this book - it says that it is "arranged" by James Sodke....it does not list the source of any of the solos, and I surmise that he wrote them, as it does not list the source recordings of any of them. It should be made very clear: this is NOT a transcription book. This is a book of simple solos, apparently written out by the "arranger", for beginners to play. I got this under the impression that these are transcriptions from the original songs - they are not - beware !

Dieser Band (gleiches gilt für die anderen Bände - Bebop, Hard Bop, Smooth Jazz etc. auch) aus der Hal Leonard Serie ist eine Freude und ein Ärgernis zugleich. Sehr erfreulich ist die Auswahl der Stücke: Neben bekannten Klassikern wie So What, All Blues, Take Five oder Waltz for Debby findet man auch nicht ganz so bekanntes wie A Ballad von G.Mulligan oder Jambangle von Gil Evans. Die Arrangements sind absolut stilsicher, anspruchsvoll und originell. Es macht einfach spaß, sie zu spielen. Technisch bewegt sich das meiste im Bereich "gute Fortgeschrittene". Balladen wie Blue in Green sind sogar recht einfach zu spielen.Das Ärgernis: Neben dem Notentext liefert der Band keinerlei Informationen - keine Einleitung, keine Infos zu den Stücken oder den Komponisten, der Stil "Cool Jazz" wir mit keiner Silbe historisch erklärt. Auf all das könnte man noch verzichten - irgendwo findet man schon etwas dazu. Doch das GÄNZLICHE Fehlen von Akkord-Symbolen ist nicht zu verzeihen. Es gehört einfach zum guten Ton, bei "Standard" die Akkordfolge anzugeben. Wer kein Profi-Jazzmusiker ist (wie ich), tut sich teilweise mit der Entschlüsselung der Akkorde recht schwer. Man versteht Stücke einfach besser, wenn Akkorde angegeben sind und es ist die Grundlage für Improvisationen. Daher nur 4 Sterne.
