Fatally flawed, but good information
Like "Patent It Yourself", the book is a gold mine of information. But when you start to use it, you find fatal flaws. For example: 1. All the conversions given for text sizes are wrong. For example, on pg 178: - 5 mm = 1/5", but that is 14 pts, not 22 pts as stated in the book. Which is right? - 3.2 mm = 1/8", but is 9 pts rather than 14 pts as stated in the book. Which is right? (1 inch = 72 pts) 2. The book gives conflicting information on reference number sizes, both of which have an incorrect conversion: - p. 178: 3.2mm = 1/8". So far so good. But the book says 14 pts, as mentioned. - p. 188: 3.2mm = 1/8", but here the book says 12 pts is the minimum. As before, which is right? This book is in its 7th printing. Yet egregious errors such as these remain.(Similar problems exist for Patent it Yourself, which is in its 18th printing.)For people used to the rigors of the patent process, who *must* have been hearing fromreaders, it's hard to understand why such errors persist. It's a shame, because the book contains a ton of good and valuable information. It's that right when you get down to brass tacks, you run into problems that stemfrom the book itself.Okay. Enough griping. They gave me a link to the USPTO website. Time to go thereand find out what the real requirements are...

It's OK. Lots of Outdated Info and Not Easy To Follow
The most valuable part of this book is that it makes the novice patent seeking individual aware of how absurdly complicated the USPTO is.The wonky page margins, substandard requirements for mechanical drawings and an exhaustive concordance of information science worst practices seem better suited to the late 1940's. I'm almost positive the standards actually are from the late 1940's.Nevertheless, those are the requirements and the book does lay them all out. But, for a technically oriented book it leaves some to be desired in the way the information is communicated. It's like reading a contract and it's the responsibility of the reader to make their own tables and matrices to avoid flipping between pages. You also need to be able to pretend you're living in late 1940's Russia to where things like clean paper and black ink are difficult to find and White-Out is more important than anything. It's really strange.Contemporary technology like CAD and word processing are kind of shoe horned into the text between manual drafting techniques and vellum.Overall it's worth the price and there's a ton of good information in the book, but you've got to make it useable information on your own.

Useful but dated
Good reference for the ‘Patent it Yourself’ but text is a little out of date around CAD.

Useful guide, but it felt like the whole book ...
Useful guide, but it felt like the whole book can be condensed in a 10-20 page pamphlet. The software they reference is outdated (think released 1997) so those parts of the book are useless.Consider picking something like Inventor, or Eagle, or whatever a popular CAD tool for your field is, and becoming much more proficient in it, export a rough figure to Illustrator for some touch-up.They also include some hand drawing methods, but that's a bit antiquated and of limited use.
